Charlotte Metro School Districts Adjust Class Schedules After Tropical Depression Debby

School Closures and Delays

Charlotte, N.C. – In response to the impact of Tropical Depression Debby, several school districts in the Charlotte area have made significant adjustments to their class schedules on Friday, August 9, 2024. Notably, Rowan-Salisbury Schools and Stanly County Schools announced closures, coinciding with their scheduled first days of the academic year.

Details of Adjustments

The first day of school for Rowan-Salisbury Schools was originally slated for Thursday, while Stanly County Schools was set to start on Friday. Additionally, Sugar Creek Charter School was also closed for the day. In contrast, the Chester County School District in South Carolina opted for a two-hour delay instead of a full closure.

Impact of Tropical Depression Debby

While it was still classified as a tropical storm, Debby delivered over four inches of rain to the Charlotte area on Thursday, as reported by the National Weather Service. The storm led to flooding across many regions, leaving more than 100,000 Duke Energy customers in the Carolinas without power.

Continued Weather Concerns

Despite the storm moving out of the Charlotte area by Friday morning, there remains a chance of additional rain later in the day, although this rain is unrelated to Debby. Rock Hill Schools and the Fort Mill School District successfully commenced their school year on Thursday, continuing as planned despite the adverse weather conditions.

Community Response

As the community recuperates from the impact of Debby, schools are taking necessary cautionary measures to ensure the safety of students and staff. Parents and students are advised to stay updated on future announcements regarding any changes to school schedules as the weather situation evolves.

Conclusion

As the effects of Tropical Depression Debby continue to be felt, the Charlotte Metro area remains vigilant in addressing weather-related challenges. The safety and well-being of students and families is a top priority as schools navigate the aftermath of this storm.
