CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For many people today, the dream of owning a home can feel like chasing a mirage, slowly fading out of reach. But a new national program is stepping up to help individuals who are finding it tough to turn that dream into reality. One incredible story coming from Charlotte is that of *Samantha Leacock*, a resilient mother of three who is finally getting a foothold on the path to homeownership after a challenging past.
Samantha first stumbled across the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA) on social media, and like many, her initial reaction was disbelief. She shared, “I saw it on TikTok, and I’m like, into homeownership so I’m like, I need to see if this is actually real.” With dreams bigger than her budget, she felt uncertain about how she could provide her children with a stable home.
“From my resources and how things have happened, I was like, I don’t know how this is gonna happen, but that’s my goal,” she recounted, reflecting on her often challenging circumstances.
Samantha’s journey took a sharp turn when she experienced a turbulent period in her life, including a toxic marriage that led to domestic violence. This distressing ordeal left her and her children without a permanent place to call home. Currently residing in transitional housing, Samantha managed to keep hope alive while planning for a brighter future.
With her dreams rekindled, she sought assistance from NACA. “They put your finances together and show you, ‘OK, this is what you need to get to where you’re trying to go,’ and it wasn’t as big as I thought it would be,” Leacock explained. The dedicated team guided her in understanding her path to homeownership, and it lifted a heavy weight off her shoulders.
Thanks to NACA, Leacock is now positioned to qualify for a mortgage with below-market rates. What stands out about this program is that it doesn’t require a down payment or closing costs, making the dream of homeownership that much more attainable.
According to NACA CEO Bruce Marks, the program does things differently. Instead of relying on traditional credit scores, it focuses on individuals’ payment history over the past year. This unique approach truly levels the playing field for many aspiring homeowners. Additionally, NACA accepts Section 8 housing vouchers and offers a home rehabilitation program, turning struggles into solutions.
Marks shared impressive statistics, noting, “We’ve done over 75,000 mortgages. We have a foreclosure rate of 0.00012, about 1/100 of 1%. So, virtually everybody is a low-moderate income home buyer, with 90% being people of color.”
Samantha looks ahead with optimism, hoping to purchase a home next year. She isn’t just dreaming for herself—she wants to inspire her children, stating, “For me, that would be showing my children that if you step out on faith and follow what God is asking you to do, that those things are possible, you can do this.”
For those curious about the possibilities that lie ahead, Marks emphasizes NACA’s openness to help anyone who reaches out. After an online application, applicants can expect a counseling session scheduled within just two weeks, with an average pre-approval time of one to three months.
With NACA’s support, Samantha Leacock is not just chasing a dream—she’s taking significant steps toward a stable home for her family. This program represents hope and a real chance at building a future they can all thrive in.
Stay tuned and take heart! Homeownership is not just a dream; for many, it’s becoming a reality, one step at a time.
