CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a world where entrepreneurial spirit thrives, Kristal J. has been blazing her own trail since her teenage years. Looking back, she recalls her early days as a “kitchen beautician,” realizing that the traditional nine-to-five job was never going to be her calling. “I always knew that I didn’t want to work a regular job,” she reminisced, highlighting her drive that eventually brought her from New York to Charlotte in 2007.
Kristal’s journey took an adventurous turn when she opened a shoe store in Concord, North Carolina. “I was selling a lot on eBay and then I was like, ‘okay, I’m just going to move.’ I didn’t even have a plan. I just wanted to take that leap of faith,” she explained. This kind of risk-taking attitude has been a theme throughout her life. “I jump first and figure out how I’m going to land,” she added, showcasing the boldness that defines her entrepreneurial spirit.
Years after launching her shoe store, Kristal became a licensed esthetician and opened a studio in NoDa. However, her ambitions reached beyond just her personal endeavors. “I kind of was like, ‘I want to help other entrepreneurs and see them through,’” she said, signaling her desire to nurture the next wave of innovators. This altruistic vision led Kristal to her biggest project yet: transforming a spacious building on West Sugar Creek Road.
In July 2024, she proudly unveiled the Moulin Bouge Lifestyle Coterie, a transformative space measuring over 5,700 square feet. But this isn’t just any typical business. It serves as a one-stop shop for self-care and entrepreneurial support, creating a community hub for individuals to thrive. “I get to work with so many entrepreneurs and be able to sit down with them and talk them through different processes,” she shared, emphasizing the supportive environment she’s created.
Moulin Bouge offers a plethora of services ranging from massage therapy and fitness classes to saunas and mental health support. Kristal highlighted the modern mindset around wellness, stating, “Coming into a space like this and people know you are going to see a therapist is regular. It’s not something you have to hide.” This deeply inclusive atmosphere not only caters to individual wellness but also fosters a community where support is paramount.
Even though Moulin Bouge is still in its early stages, Kristal is brimming with ideas for expansion. “I can already see it growing into something even bigger,” she said with a sense of excitement in her voice. The potential of this unique hub is evident, and Kristal’s journey reminds us of the importance of community, support, and a little bit of risk-taking in achieving our dreams.
As Kristal continues to pave the way for her ventures and those of others, Charlotte celebrates her contributions to the entrepreneurial landscape and the emphasis on self-care in today’s fast-paced world.
