CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As the holiday season nears, Charlotte is facing a pressing issue that tugs at the heartstrings of its residents: the growing number of people experiencing homelessness. Local nonprofits are urgently sounding the alarm, pleading for assistance as shelters are at full capacity and the demand is expected to surge further in the coming months.
Jessica Lefkowitz, executive director of Hearts for the Invisible, painted a vivid and heartbreaking picture of the current situation. “It’s literally babies sleeping outside in tents,” she shared with a heavy heart. This is not just a statistic; it’s a reality for many families who are struggling to find shelter in a city where resources are stretched thin.
The rising homelessness problem in Charlotte is compounded by the fact that many families, who wish to stay together, are finding it nearly impossible to secure shelter. As the temperatures begin to drop, the urgency intensifies. “My concern in the colder months is that we’re not gonna have enough shelter to support [the families],” Lefkowitz said, echoing the fears of many advocates in the community.
Organizations like Roof Above run three men’s shelters in Charlotte, boasting over 530 beds, yet these facilities have been occupied for months. “For several months now, they have always been full,” noted Randall Hitt, vice president of unsheltered services for Roof Above. He also highlighted a concerning trend: “We’re identifying more women and children, and I think those are the hardest beds to kind of find in our community.” The challenge lies in the current structure of shelters, which often cater to either women with children or men, leaving intact families out in the cold.
In response to the urgent need, Roof Above has initiated a temporary solution known as “Room in the Inn.” This program, running from December to April, relies on partnerships with various community sites, particularly congregations and churches, to provide necessary shelter. However, the message is clear: more community involvement is essential. “I’m really hoping that more churches step up because we are going to need it,” Lefkowitz added.
While the community rallies for immediate solutions, both Lefkowitz and Hitt stress the importance of a long-term approach. The root of the problem lies in the lack of affordable housing for very low-income renters. Advocates believe that without tackling the underlying issues, the problem will persist, no matter how many shelters are created.
For those inspired to lend a hand this winter, there are ample opportunities to make a difference. Roof Above is actively seeking partners to expand their winter shelter program. Details on how to get involved can be found on their website. Additionally, Hearts for the Invisible is accepting donations of sleeping bags and blankets for those who are unsheltered. Lefkowitz mentioned that individuals can reach out directly to her organization for drop-off or pickup options.
As Charlotte navigates through these chilly months ahead, the community’s collective response could prove invaluable. It’s a reminder that while the challenges are significant, the compassion and willingness to help from neighbors can make a world of difference for those experiencing homelessness. Now more than ever, the spirit of unity and assistance is needed as we strive to ensure that no one has to sleep outside this winter.
