Outdoor concert season in Charlotte got off to a rousing start Tuesday night as Irish folk/soul artist Andrew Hozier-Byrne, known simply as Hozier, graced the stage at PNC Music Pavilion for the third stop on his Unreal Unearth Tour. With clear skies and well-timed breezes, it was a picturesque evening as eager fans of all ages dressed in Hozier band shirts, flowy bohemian dresses, and earthy accessories.
Fresh off the news of his single, “Two Sweet,” reaching No. 1 on the Billboard charts, the 34-year-old blues and gospel-influenced crooner dazzled the sold-out crowd. The chart-topping song is also a landmark moment for the Ireland native; he’s the first Irish artist to earn a No. 1 song since the late Sinéad O’Connor accomplished the feat in April of 1990 for “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
Canadian Americana/folk singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Allison Russell, opened the show with a captivating performance. Russell’s musical dexterity was on full display as she engaged the crowd with songs from her latest album, The Returner. The evening was filled with messages of inclusivity as Russell welcomed fans of all backgrounds and orientations.
As the stage darkened and the audience eagerly awaited Hozier’s arrival, the atmosphere was electric. With his acoustic guitar in hand and his thick brown mane flowing, Hozier kicked off his set with “De Selby (Part 1).” The 20-song set featured tracks from his three-album catalog, with hits like “Jackie and Wilson” and “Take Me to Church” stirring the crowd to life.
The stage was set on fire as Hozier and Russell joined forces for a duet of “Wildflower and Barley,” showcasing their undeniable chemistry. The evening reached its peak as blue flames engulfed the stage during the performance of “Take Me to Church,” with fans singing along to every word.
As the night drew to a close, Hozier delivered a powerful encore, including soul-stirring performances of “Cherry Wine,” “Nina Cried Power,” and “Work Song” alongside Russell. The celestial evening of music was a fitting start to the outdoor concert season in Charlotte.
