CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The 19th Annual Charlotte Playground Build kicked off at Westerly Hills Academy in west Charlotte, showcasing the power of community collaboration and youth empowerment. Approximately 250 volunteers from 17 different companies joined forces to make the event a success, providing both funding and manpower to install a brand new playground for the students.
One of the unique aspects of this year’s playground build was the involvement of the students themselves in the design process. With the guidance of United Way and other volunteers, the students at Westerly Hills had the opportunity to create the playground of their dreams. This hands-on experience not only empowered the students to exercise their creativity but also instilled a sense of ownership and pride in their new play space.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools strategically chose to coincide the playground build with Volunteer Appreciation Month to highlight the importance of giving back to the community. By participating in a project that directly benefits their school, students were able to see firsthand the impact of volunteerism and collective action. The event served as a valuable lesson in the power of unity and philanthropy.
Bob Young of United Way emphasized the significance of events like the Charlotte Playground Build in bringing diverse communities together for a common cause. “I think it’s an opportunity for them to get outside of their offices, to get out of their vans or wherever they’re working, and come out into the community and see the impact that they can have in a single day,” Young stated. The event not only beautified the school grounds but also fostered a sense of camaraderie among participants.
By actively participating in the playground build, students learned valuable lessons beyond the classroom. They witnessed the tangible results of teamwork, creativity, and community support. The event underscored the importance of investing in youth development and providing safe and engaging spaces for children to play.
The Charlotte Playground Build has become a cherished tradition in the local community, symbolizing the spirit of generosity and collaboration that defines Charlotte. Each year, new volunteers and sponsors join in the effort to enhance the lives of children and strengthen the bonds within the community. The legacy of the playground build serves as a reminder of the positive impact that can be achieved when individuals come together with a shared goal.
As the 19th Annual Charlotte Playground Build came to a close, the echoes of laughter and the sight of smiling faces on the playground served as a testament to the success of the event. The collaborative effort of volunteers, students, and organizers had transformed a space into a hub of joy and creativity, leaving a lasting impact on all who took part.
