News Summary

Charlotte is set to experience a remarkable 50% population increase over the next 25 years, raising the total to approximately 4.6 million by 2050. This growth, driven by strong economic factors, will necessitate future planning in infrastructure, housing, and services. As the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance transitions leadership, the community is gearing up for the upcoming challenges and opportunities that this significant growth will bring.

Charlotte Eyes Vibrant Future with Expected Population Boom!

The lively city of Charlotte is buzzing with excitement as local experts project a hefty 50% increase in population over the next 25 years! Yes, you heard that right! This captivating growth forecast has implications that are sure to shake things up in the area. In fact, we’re talking about Charlotte’s current population climbing from around 3 million to an impressive 4.6 million residents by the year 2050. Buckle up, folks; things are about to get busy!

A Quick Look Back

Just five short years ago, the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance (CRBA) was born from the blending of the city’s chamber and the Charlotte Regional Partnership. This move was aimed at cutting down on unnecessary duplication, lowering costs, and coming together as one cohesive economic body for a sprawling region that encompasses 16 counties across two states.

Initially at the helm was Janet LaBar, who made waves in the community as the first CEO of the Alliance. LaBar took on this unconventional role back in March 2019, bringing with her a wealth of economic development experience from places like Phoenix and Portland. As a woman in a predominantly male field, her appointment was a significant step toward broadening representation.

But, in an unexpected twist, LaBar announced her departure during an Alliance meeting in April. Talk about a plot twist! This left the reins temporarily in the capable hands of Andrea Smith, who stepped up as the interim CEO. Smith brings an extensive background in banking, notably having served as the chief administrative officer at Bank of America. The search for a permanent leader is now in full swing, with hopes to fill that position by late summer.

Finding a New Vision

The board of the CRBA is actively seeking input from economic developers throughout the 14 counties affiliated with the Alliance. They want a new CEO who can truly connect with the community rather than just fill the role with extensive credentials in the economic development field. This is an exciting time for potential job candidates, and the position will likely include hiring a replacement for the previous economic development leader, Danny Chavez. With a budget of around $10 million and about 30 dedicated employees, the Alliance is poised for a transformation.

Interestingly, even before LaBar made her abrupt exit, the leaders were eyeing ways to tighten collaboration with both state and local economic development groups. While they confirmed that they don’t anticipate drastic shifts operationally, improvements are definitely in the cards.

Charlotte’s Growing Population

Now, let’s get back to that population boom! The CRBA has conducted a study, based on data from the North Carolina Office of State Budget and Management and the South Carolina Department of Revenue, projecting a jaw-dropping increase in people calling Charlotte home. In particular, Mecklenburg County is set to welcome over 600,000 new residents, leading to a future population of approximately 1.7 million.

While the spotlight may be shining brightest on Charlotte, other surrounding areas aren’t sitting still either. Expect substantial growth in Union and Iredell counties in North Carolina and York County in South Carolina. Lancaster County in South Carolina is projected to see a whopping 71% population increase as well!

These promising predictions have led the CRBA to emphasize the urgent need for forward-thinking in terms of infrastructure, housing, and transportation. With nearly 1.3 million new residents anticipated in the next two decades, proactive investments are essential to accommodate everyone comfortably.

Charlotte: A City Ready for Change

From new job opportunities to an increase in services and amenities, Charlotte is gearing up for a significant evolution. Over 962,000 new residents have already made the move to the region from 2001 to 2025, and as we look ahead, it’s clear that the Queen City is ready to take on everything that comes with this change.

Stay tuned, folks! The next chapter for Charlotte is just beginning, and the possibilities seem endless!
