Charlotte Gears Up for the Strides for Shelter 5K This Weekend
Charlotte, N.C. is buzzing with excitement as the Canopy Housing Foundation prepares for its annual Strides for Shelter 5K this weekend. Taking place on October 19th at 8:30 a.m. at McAlpine Creek Park, this event not only promises a good time but also serves a meaningful purpose—a cause that resonates deeply within the community.
A Race with a Purpose
This year, the proceeds from the 5K will support the construction of a fully furnished one-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage specifically for a homeless veteran. It’s all thanks to the Home Again Foundation, which has been chosen as the primary beneficiary of this year’s race. The Canopy Housing Foundation has been a pivotal player in addressing unmet housing needs in Charlotte, advocating tirelessly for fair and affordable housing standards and practices.
Since its inception in 2015, the Strides for Shelter race has raised over $170,000, directly benefiting seven different organizations dedicated to helping those in need. This impressive achievement highlights the power of community involvement and shows just how much local events can change lives.
Voices from the Heart
The heart behind this event truly shines through with the words of Dottie Ciarrocchi, the co-chair of Strides for Shelter. She shared her thoughts on the significance of helping veterans, stating, “To do this for a homeless veteran just really means a lot. To do something for veterans who have given so much for us.” Her own family ties to the military make this cause even more personal. “My grandfather was a veteran, my father-in-law, and many friends of mine. It’s just really special and it’s a great opportunity for realtors to show what we can do for our community.”
Event Highlights
Everyone can get involved, whether you want to walk, jog, or run. In addition to the in-person race, participants have the option to join in virtually, allowing folks to complete their 5K on their own terms. This not only encourages broader participation but also accommodates those who might not be able to make it to the park on race day.
This year’s grand marshal is none other than former WBTV chief meteorologist Eric Thomas, adding an exciting touch of local celebrity to the event. Thomas is expected to inspire participants, making the race even more memorable.
