Charlotte, N.C.: 8 Arrested, Dozens Pepper Sprayed In Unlawful Protest

Unlawful Protest Leads to Arrests and Injuries

Eight people were arrested and dozens were pepper sprayed during an unlawful protest that took place on Saturday in Charlotte, N.C. The protest, which initially started on private property, spilled out onto Monroe Road and lasted approximately 10 hours. The demonstration was sparked by conflicting views on the leadership of the small eastern African country of Eritrea.

According to the police, around 200 individuals were participating in the protest. Despite multiple warnings to disperse, the protesters refused to vacate the area. As a result, law enforcement resorted to pepper spraying those who remained in the street. Several protesters and officers sustained injuries from the pepper spray, with some instances of violence occurring when protesters began throwing objects and wielding sticks and rocks.

Vehicle Set on Fire and Firearms Seized

Amid the chaos, a tractor trailer was intentionally set ablaze but was swiftly extinguished by authorities. In addition to the arrests made, two firearms were seized during the protest. One female protester was taken into custody for allegedly inciting a riot and assaulting an officer. She was found to be in possession of a firearm at the time of her arrest.

Road Closure and Reopening

Monroe Road between McAlway Drive and Alliance Drive was closed off for the majority of Saturday due to the protest. However, the road was reopened to traffic after 9 p.m. following the resolution of the demonstration.
