Charlotte Pays Tribute to Remarkable Citizens Lost in 2024

Charlotte Remembers: A Heartfelt Farewell to Significant Citizens

Charlotte, our vibrant city, recently took a moment to pause and reflect on the lives of some remarkable individuals who left their mark in 2024. These were not just prominent figures, but true fixtures of our community—from the civic leaders who shaped our city to beloved brewers and courageous law enforcement officers. Let’s celebrate their legacies and remember what they brought to Charlotte.

The Titans of Banking: Hugh McColl and Ed Crutchfield

When we talk about Charlotte’s rise as a national banking center, we can’t forget the foundational work done by Hugh McColl and Ed Crutchfield. Their story is woven into the very fabric of our city, where their rivalries and collaborations shaped our financial landscape. Crutchfield, who passed away on January 2, left an indelible mark on Charlotte.

Born in Michigan, Ed Crutchfield moved to Albemarle and later graduated from Davidson College. After obtaining his MBA from the Wharton School, he joined First Union Bank in 1965 and became its president just seven years later. His leadership coincided with pivotal changes in banking laws, allowing smaller banks like First Union to merge and thrive. Under Crutchfield and McColl’s guidance, Charlotte surged ahead, positioned as the second-largest banking center in the nation, just behind New York.

Remembering Dan Wade and the Spirit of Brewing

In a heart-wrenching accident, the Charlotte brewing community lost a beloved figure, Dan Wade, co-founder of Wooden Robot Brewery. Wade’s untimely demise on February 20 left a profound void in the local craft beer scene, which has seen a boom over recent years. As family and friends gathered at Town Brewing Co. for a tribute, the camaraderie was palpable—spirits were high, yet everyone understood the significance of the occasion.

In tribute to Wade, brewers joined forces to create a special beer dubbed Cosmic Ballet—a name inspired by Wade himself—where proceeds support his family. It was a beautiful moment of collective remembrance, showcasing not just the loss but the love and support within the community.

Civic Leader Lynn Wheeler: A Voice for Charlotte

Another remarkable life remembered is Lynn Wheeler, a seven-term Republican City Council member, who passed away on February 24. Wheeler, known for her dynamic personality and strong advocacy for the uptown arena, which is now the Spectrum Center, embodied the spirit of public service. Friends and allies from all political backgrounds pay tribute to how she tirelessly worked for Charlotte, generating discussions and keeping the pulse of the city alive with her colorful commentary.

Tragedy Strikes Charlotte’s Heroes

This year also marked a day of infinite sorrow in our city, as four officers were tragically killed in the line of duty during a standoff with a gunman. This unprecedented event marked the deadliest day for law enforcement in Charlotte’s history. President Biden made a point to visit and honor the bravery of the fallen officers, reminding us all of the sacrifices made daily by those protecting our community.

Literary Luminary: Dannye Romine Powell

Charlotte also mourned the loss of Dannye Romine Powell, a beloved journalist whose poetic touch graced countless pages of our local newspaper. She died on October 10 after a courageous fight with lung cancer. Her profound insights on people’s lives are what truly set her apart, and reflecting on her work emphasizes the powerful role journalism plays in bridging conversations in our community.

The Heart of Design: Traci Zeller

On August 10, the world of interior design lost Traci Zeller, a bright star known for her chic and timeless designs. Zeller passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of beauty and style that many will cherish. Her celebration of life was a fitting tribute to her vibrant personality and keen eye for aesthetics, as guests donned bright colors and shared stories of the joy she brought to their lives.

A Legacy of Justice: Kelly Alexander Jr.

Lastly, we remember Kelly Alexander Jr., a champion for equality and justice, who passed away on September 6. Known for his advocacy within the NAACP and his impactful legislative work, Alexander stood as a beacon for so many in the community. His contributions to the fight for justice will inspire future generations.

As we say goodbye to these incredible individuals, we embrace the legacies they left behind. From banking heroes to brewing legends, each played a unique role in making Charlotte the incredible city it is today. Their spirits will continue to guide us through the challenges ahead, reminding us to appreciate the beauty and vibrancy of community. Thank you for the memories!
