Charlotte Prepares for a Snowy Day: Remote Learning Initiated

As winter makes its presence felt, Charlotte is gearing up for what looks like a frosty day ahead! On February 19, 2025, all schools within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) district will be transitioning to remote learning due to the anticipated winter weather. So, grab your hot cocoa, cozy blankets, and get ready for a day of learning from home!

What You Need to Know

In a timely announcement made on the evening of February 18, CMS officials shared that all schools in the district will be closed on Wednesday. If you had testing scheduled, don’t worry! It will be resumed when students are back in their classrooms.

Extracurricular activities, facility use, and athletics are all off the table for this cold day. Parents should also note that the Before and After School Enrichment program is canceled for the day. So, no early drop-offs or late pick-ups.

Winter Weather Advisory

As for the weather, a winter weather advisory is in effect from Wednesday morning through noon on Thursday. The forecast is calling for just a couple of inches of snow on either side of the I-40 corridor, while the Charlotte Metro area will experience less than an inch of snow and sleet. Bundle up, because temperatures are expected to dip slightly below freezing on Tuesday night before climbing back up to around 36 degrees on Wednesday. The light precipitation is set to start after sunrise, peaking late in the morning before wrapping up in the afternoon.

Regional School Responses

It’s not just CMS making adjustments, though! Other school districts are following suit. UNC Charlotte will be operating on reduced capacity and requiring all classes to be delivered remotely. Likewise, Cabarrus County Schools announced an asynchronous remote learning day while closing in-person teaching.

Catawba County Schools and Hickory City Schools have also jumped on the remote learning bandwagon, ensuring students stay safe indoors. Chester County School District had already planned for a spring intersession, so their campuses will remain closed. Clover School District is taking a break for its winter intersession from February 17-21.

Meanwhile, Gaston County Schools will shift to remote learning, allowing students the flexibility to work at their own pace. The same goes for Iredell-Statesville Schools and Kannapolis City Schools. Mooresville Graded School District has also canceled school along with all extracurriculars while Rowan-Salisbury Schools will have a remote learning day, scrapping any after-school activities.

Community Preparedness

NCDOT is getting ready to treat the roads, and workers will be on 12-hour shifts once the snowfall begins. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is also fully prepared with essential staff and equipment for snow removal and de-icing operations, just in case the weather affects travel plans.

Stay Safe and Stock Up!

Residents are reminded to stock up on essentials as the winter weather approaches. It’s always a good idea to have enough food, water, and supplies to last you through potential power outages. And don’t forget to charge your devices so you can stay connected while enjoying a cozy day indoors.

Stay warm, Charlotte, and let’s embrace the winter wonderland together – from the comfort of our homes!
