Hey Charlotte! It’s a lovely day outside with clear skies and a low of 44°F. But as we enjoy the nice weather, it’s essential to shed light on a concern that’s been growing in our beloved city—homelessness. Did you know that as of July 2024, over 3,000 people in Mecklenburg County were experiencing homelessness? That’s a staggering 27% increase from just a year before! These numbers highlight a pressing challenge that our community needs to tackle together.
With one in 1,250 people in North Carolina left without a place to call home, our state ranks No. 18 in the nation for homelessness rates. Charlotte is significantly contributing to this statistic, with Mecklenburg County accounting for a larger share of the homeless population than Wake County by over 60%. It’s heartbreaking to think that many of our neighbors are struggling to find shelter.
Jakeah Glenn, a dedicated receptionist and community event host at a local organization, emphasizes the importance of collaboration in tackling homelessness. “Leaders in Charlotte have made commendable strides, such as boosting funding for shelters and supportive housing programs,” says Glenn. However, she believes there’s still much work to do. “Improving collaboration among service providers and focusing on long-term solutions—like job training and mental health support—would have a more significant impact on addressing the root causes of homelessness.”
It’s particularly alarming that homelessness is on the rise among our youth. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools, there were as many as 4,815 homeless students by the end of the school year 2022-2023, the highest figure in eight years. Additionally, college students at UNC Charlotte and other local universities often face housing insecurity while juggling their studies. These young adults shouldn’t have to worry about where they’ll sleep at night; they should be focused on their education.
Unfortunately, the situation becomes even more difficult for those experiencing homelessness, as actions like panhandling or sleeping in parks can lead to arrests. In Charlotte, these acts are still classified as “lewd behavior.” “We need to move away from criminalizing homelessness and instead, offer real solutions,” shares Glenn. “De-stigmatizing how the community reacts to homelessness starts with education and awareness.”
Despite these challenges, the spirit of giving and support remains alive in Charlotte. Over 250 organizations have come together to form a coalition called A Home For All, working towards the goal of fulfilling the need for 24,442 more housing units in the city. This coalition emphasizes the importance of a data-driven approach to tackle homelessness effectively.
For those wanting to help, Charlotteans can volunteer at numerous shelters and food pantries throughout the city. One great option is the Jamil Niner Food Pantry, conveniently located near campus, which serves students in need. “Encouraging volunteer opportunities at local shelters allows people to connect directly with those experiencing homelessness,” Glenn adds. Supporting initiatives focused on job training, affordable housing, and mental health services is crucial to making a real difference.
All in all, while the statistics around homelessness in Charlotte can be disheartening, there are many dedicated volunteers, non-profit organizations, and community leaders working hard to combat the issue. The best part? You too can make a difference! Even dedicating just an hour of your time to volunteer or donating to a local shelter can help bring us closer to a future where every Charlotte resident has a safe place to call home.
So, as we enjoy the beautiful weather and think about how we can help, remember that together, we have the power to create positive change in our community. Let’s all do our part to support those in need!
