Hey, Charlotte! We’ve got some fantastic news to share with you! The Biden-Harris Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation have granted our city $3.15 million to help improve road safety. That’s right—this big chunk of change is all thanks to Rep. Alma S. Adams, who made the announcement earlier this week.
This funding will support the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) through a project named Safety is Everyone’s Business. The goal? To tackle roadway deaths and serious injuries head-on. With a record of 117 fatalities from car accidents in Mecklenburg County this past year, and while it’s a slight improvement from last year’s 139, we can’t rest on our laurels. This money is crucial for making our roads safer for everyone.
The CRTPO plans to use this funding to develop a comprehensive Safety Action Plan across our three-county area, which includes Iredell, Mecklenburg, and Union counties. With this plan, authorities will be able to pinpoint the most dangerous spots on our roads—those areas that need immediate traffic safety enhancements. The plan will create a High Injury Network that highlights these high-priority corridors and intersections. Sounds great, right?
Life in Charlotte is bustling, and with so many of us on the move, it’s essential to keep our communities safe. Every year, countless lives are affected by roadway incidents, and this funding is a proactive step toward saving lives. Robert Cook, the RTPO Director, expressed that this multi-jurisdictional plan aims to provide our leaders with a clear view of transportation safety conditions, offering data-driven recommendations and long-term action plans to address the pressing challenges we face on our roads.
But wait, there’s more! Just a month prior, the CRTPO snagged an additional $5 million through the Department of Transportation’s Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grant. This funding is dedicated to examining transportation issues within areas historically marginalized, along with focusing on communities facing persistent poverty. This comprehensive look into our transportation challenges is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021.
Both grants reflect our city’s commitment to ensuring everyone feels safe navigating our roads—not just today, but in the future as well. It’s about building a network that prioritizes people over vehicles and making sure all parts of our community are facilitated.
As Charlotte gears up for these exciting improvements, it’s more important than ever for us to stay informed and engaged with these developments. At QCity Metro, our mission is to serve Black communities in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area by providing news, information, and events that resonate with our lives. If you’re inspired by the progress happening in our city, consider supporting our journalism so we can continue sharing these important updates.
A small contribution—whether it’s a one-time $15 donation or something more substantial—can greatly help cover the costs of the reporting you rely on. We appreciate your support!
As we look ahead, let’s embrace the positive changes in our transportation infrastructure. With the added funding, more secure roads, and safer neighborhoods are on the horizon. Remember, safer streets are a community effort, and the more we come together to support these initiatives, the stronger our city becomes. Cheers to a brighter, safer future for all of us in Charlotte!
