The City of Charlotte Partners with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to Educate Students About Pollinators
The City of Charlotte recently collaborated with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) on two innovative projects aimed at educating students and enhancing neighborhood beautification. Second graders had the opportunity to visit the Landscape Management division’s office building on Tuckaseegee Road for an interactive field trip on pollination. Following this, Landscape Management, in partnership with Corridors of Opportunity and Keep Charlotte Beautiful, embarked on the “Spring Greening” project, involving the planting of new pollinator gardens on five CMS school campuses over Spring Break.

Charlotte, North Carolina, has been an affiliate of Bee City USA since March 13, 2023, demonstrating a commitment to supporting pollinators. Bee City USA is a national program that focuses on pollinator conservation at the local level. The city aims to educate the public on the significance of pollinators, enhance habitats with designated gardens, and reduce pesticide usage in pollinator-rich areas.
Partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
Recognizing the importance of education in supporting pollinators, the City of Charlotte partnered with CMS to engage students in hands-on learning experiences. The recent Spring Greening project, made possible with a $10,000 donation from Lowe’s and 92 hours of volunteer gardening, involved planting over 3,000 native pollinator plants across five CMS school campuses. The gardens feature low-maintenance, prairie-style designs to provide long-term outdoor learning opportunities.
