As winter weather approaches, schools across the Charlotte area are altering their schedules to ensure student safety. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will pivot to remote learning on Friday, providing assignments to be completed at home. Other districts, including Cabarrus, Catawba, and Gaston County, are also implementing closures and remote learning days. As winter weather prepares to sweep across the Charlotte region this weekend, schools are making necessary adjustments to their schedules. With a winter storm watch in effect for several counties, parents and students alike are gearing up for what might be an eventful couple of days.
Forecasts are predicting up to 5 inches of snow in the mountains and areas north of Interstate 40 in the Piedmont. Meanwhile, the rest of the region could see a wintry mix of ice and snow, leading to a combined precipitation of up to 2 inches. Snow is expected to start making its way into the Charlotte area on Friday afternoon, which raises concerns about road safety and travel.
In response to the impending storm, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are planning to have a remote learning day on Friday. Students will receive assignments on Thursday, January 9, to complete from the comfort of their homes. The deadline for submission will be Monday, January 13. Notably, there will be no after-school activities or athletic events held on Friday.
It’s not just Charlotte-Mecklenburg; many districts are following suit. Cabarrus County Schools will be closed for the day without the need for a make-up day. They’re also canceling all athletic and extracurricular activities from Friday to Sunday, January 12.
Catawba County Schools will also close on Friday, but they’re giving teachers an optional workday. A district-wide spelling bee has been postponed until February 7 due to the weather conditions.
Over in Chester County School District, all district facilities will be closed on Friday, with students switching to remote learning until Sunday. Similarly, the Clover School District is opting for e-learning, ensuring staff is available online to assist students.
Fort Mill School District has joined the trend by closing facilities on Friday and going with e-learning, while canceling after-school activities as well. Gaston County Schools will conduct a remote learning day on Friday, ensuring students stay busy and productive while schools are closed.
Hickory City Schools is also implementing a remote learning strategy, utilizing online platforms to share instructions with students. Iredell-Statesville Schools and Kannapolis City Schools are in the same boat, with all facilities closed on Friday.
Over in Lancaster County School District, Friday will see closures as well, moving students to e-learning while facilities remain closed. Meanwhile, Lincoln County Schools plans to close for students but allows an optional workday for staff.
Other districts such as Mooresville Graded School District and Rock Hill Schools will follow with remote learning, canceling all extracurricular activities for the day. Union County Public Schools has opted for complete closure as well, while York School District will also conduct e-learning and close facilities.
As the winter storm is set to leave its mark, the Charlotte metro area may face lingering effects into the following week. Icy road conditions could pose significant safety issues. By Monday, January 13, various school districts are already reporting delayed starts, closures, and emergencies due to the dangerous conditions created by the winter weather. The expected impact includes less than an inch of snow across much of the Charlotte region but higher totals are anticipated in the foothills and mountains.
