Charlotte, NC – In a significant turn of events, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden has found himself in hot water following serious allegations from former employees regarding a hostile work environment. On Thursday, he took to social media to express regret, sharing a brief but powerful one-minute video to address these concerns head-on.
In his heartfelt video message, Sheriff McFadden acknowledged the uncomfortable language attributed to him, stating, “I want to apologize for that language. Held to a higher standard. That’s the office of the sheriff. But you must understand that I am human and I’m not perfect. And I will make mistakes.” His candidness about the situation aims to reassure both the community and his staff about his commitment to improvement.
Former employees have claimed that McFadden’s behavior has created a toxic environment in the office. These accusations include reports of racially-charged language and overall negativity that has impacted morale. While pledging to be transparent, McFadden hinted at his legal constraints, saying, “The interviews, the interviews will come because they have the luxury to talk openly and freely. But by law, I am not. Because I’m bound by law, and I can’t speak openly and freely.” With words like that, it’s clear the sheriff is trying to navigate a complicated situation.
The sheriff announced that the office is reimagining its leadership landscape. Shanta Williams has been appointed Interim Director of Human Resources. With nearly 25 years of experience under her belt, having begun as a Fiscal Analyst and most recently serving as an HR Consultant, she brings a wealth of experience to the role. The question is—will her long history help restore some much-needed stability?
Additionally, Christopher Allen has stepped in as Interim Chief Deputy. Allen joined the sheriff’s office from the Union County Sheriff’s Office earlier this year and has proven to be a valuable asset as Chief of Staff. With over 20 years in law enforcement, he’s ready to lead the charge for change.
Meanwhile, Shelby Jones has officially been promoted to Chief of Staff. She was one of the first hires made by McFadden when he took office in 2018, serving as Executive Assistant until now. Her deep understanding of the sheriff’s office and commitment to its mission will undoubtedly be vital as the organization navigates this challenging period.
Lastly, Andrey Melkonyan has been promoted to Director of Business Operations. With a history with MCSO dating back to 2008, Melkonyan has demonstrated his ability to manage the financial side of the office. Would he be the financial wizard needed during these tumultuous times? Only time will tell!
As the sheriff’s office looks to rebuild trust within its ranks, all eyes will remain on McFadden and his leadership team in the coming weeks. The turmoil has opened doors for new opportunities but has also posed a significant challenge in maintaining community trust. What’s next for the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office? Only time, and perhaps a few more videos, will tell.
