Crushed car near highway tree
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Two people were killed, including a local teenager, and two Charlotte high school students are in critical condition after a single-vehicle car crash in Asheville Saturday night, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Sophie Gordon, 16, of Charlotte, and Robert Fox, 19, of Illinois, were identified as the people killed. Sophie was a junior at Myers Park High School, and two juniors at Charlotte Catholic High School students are in the ICU at Mission Hospital in Asheville.
Staff at Charlotte Catholic High School said the two juniors involved in the crash were Abby Lynn Robinson and Isabella Tarantelli.
Troopers say the wreck happened around 11:30 p.m. along Interstate 40. Reports stated the driver tried to take Exit 53B off-ramp, but the car was going too fast to negotiate the ramp safely and lost control, ran off the left side of the roadway, and hit a tree.
Six people were in the vehicle, and of the injuries reported, officials advised the driver and additional passenger were the only ones to suffer minor injuries.
On Monday, Charlotte Catholic High School students and staff attended Mass to pray for families impacted by the crash. The school’s assistant principal, Bobby Conrad, said Robinson and Tarantelli’s families are asking for prayer during this time.
No charges or further information has been released at this time. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
