Charlotte, N.C. – After a lengthy journey of **15 years** filled with discussions, planning sessions, and hopes, Charlotte leaders have officially completed the purchase of the O-Line from Norfolk Southern Corporation. This momentous occasion was finalized on Monday, September 9, following a decisive vote from the city council on September 3, where the result was 10 in favor and just 1 against.
The deal wasn’t just for a piece of land; it included a **22-mile stretch** of railroad right-of-way, crucial track improvements, and property rights, all for a total investment of **$74 million**. Additionally, the city council acquired approximately **1.6 acres** of property near the Charlotte Gateway Station, which is located at the bustling intersection of West Trade and Graham streets. The cost for this added parcel? A further **$17 million**.
With the completion of this purchase, Charlotte is one step closer to launching a much-anticipated rail service known as the **Red Line**. Once up and running, it’s expected to facilitate **42 one-way trips** daily, providing a significant boost to public transportation in the area.
Our mayor, Vi Lyles, celebrated this landmark achievement, stating, “This is a pivotal moment for our city, reflecting our commitment to creating a robust and efficient transportation network for all of our region.” The sentiment shared by Mayor Lyles echoed throughout the community as many expressed their excitement over improved transportation options.
Mayor Lyles further remarked in a press release that the council’s vote represents a historic milestone as the city secures the O-Line for future commuter rail developments. “I greatly appreciate all of our elected leaders who have worked to make this finally come to fruition,” she noted.
While this purchase marks a significant step forward for the city, it is important to remember that Norfolk Southern will maintain its operations for freight services along the O-Line, and the agreement has room for potential expansion into areas like Mooresville and Iredell County. However, there has already been some local pushback regarding the expansion plans, notably from Mooresville’s mayor and its residents who fear it might not address their town’s traffic issues.
To cover the total $91 million price tag associated with this complete transit project, city officials have proposed a **one-cent sales tax increase** across the county. This proposal still awaits approval from the General Assembly before it can be included on the 2025 ballot for voters.
This purchase and the envisioned rail service are about more than just transportation; they are about investing in the future of our community. The development aims not only to ease traffic congestion but also to provide residents with reliable transit options that connect various neighborhoods and improve access to jobs and amenities.
As we look forward to the benefits of the Red Line, the steps taken by city leaders signify their ongoing commitment to investing in Charlotte’s transportation infrastructure. The hope is that with these advancements, Charlotte will become a more connected and commuter-friendly city, setting a positive example for how urban areas can evolve and adapt to the needs of their residents.
Stay tuned, as we continue to follow the progress of this exciting transportation project that promises to reshape the way we travel throughout Charlotte!
