CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Exciting changes are afoot for the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) as they tackle issues highlighted in two recent federal audits, aiming to restore public trust and enhance their overall service. After facing criticism for years of alleged neglect, the transit authority is stepping up to the plate and taking action to smooth out those bumpy rides.
During a recent Transportation, Planning and Development Committee meeting, interim CEO Brett Cagle laid out the good news to city officials. CATS is already on the path to addressing the issues identified in two audits conducted by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The first audit, which focused on the financial aspects of CATS, was completed earlier this year, and Cagle expressed that all necessary corrective actions have been taken.
However, the second audit, centering on special maintenance review, laid bare some shocking findings. Notably, it was revealed that maintenance oversights had played a significant role in causing derailments on the system’s Blue Line trains dating back to 2022. It turns out that CATS had neglected the maintenance needs of the wheel sets or trucks used on these trains.
On a brighter note, Siemens, the manufacturer of the trains, is now on the case, ensuring that all necessary maintenance is completed. A contract in place allows CATS to continue conducting essential maintenance going forward, preventing similar mishaps from happening in the future. “It’s all about getting things back on track,” commented Cagle.
To enhance reliability, CATS has taken a significant step by ordering 70 new buses, with half of them already delivered. These new vehicles are expected to significantly reduce breakdowns, an issue that has plagued the transit system for years. Furthermore, overdue bridge inspections and facility maintenance have now been completed, addressing yet another aspect of CATS’s earlier shortcomings.
The city council’s transportation committee member, Ed Driggs, was optimistic during the meeting, declaring, “I believe that this FTA report signifies that we have reached a stable situation.” He reassured everyone that despite the challenges ahead, significant progress has been made to ensure CATS is on a better path. Driggs underscored the need for continual maintenance, stating that while all identified actions have been initiated, more work lies ahead.
Driggs expressed his gratitude towards Cagle, recognizing the hard work that’s been poured into restoring confidence in CATS. He also praised the efforts of the special working group which was implemented for oversight—reporting that their goal has been achieved, and further meetings are likely unnecessary moving forward.
With all these developments, Charlotte residents can look forward to a robust and renewed transit system. The CATS team seems committed to not only addressing past mistakes but also planning for a better and safer future for everyone who relies on their services.
As the dust begins to settle from the audits, it’s heartening to see CATS taking the reins and genuinely pushing for improvement, marking a new chapter in Charlotte’s public transportation saga. Stay tuned, as the developments continue—Charlotte will surely benefit from these enhancements in the bus and rail systems.
