Residents are left feeling unsafe following a quadruple shooting and an officer-involved fatality, as the community grapples with unexpected distress. This past weekend, Charlotte was rocked by a series of violent incidents that have left residents shaken and concerned for their safety. With two police scenes emerging in the Steele Creek area and a quadruple shooting just days before, the community is grappling with an uptick in violence that many find startling.
On Sunday afternoon, around 1 p.m., police set up multiple scenes in the southwest region of Charlotte, particularly in the communities between Winget Road and Planters Row Drive. One of the police scenes was situated at the intersection of Krislyn Woods Place and Creek Turn Drive, where officers cordoned off a red sedan that had noticeable front-end damage. However, the connection between this and a second scene on Planters Row Drive remains unclear.
Residents of the area, who often describe their neighborhood as peaceful, now find themselves dealing with unexpected distress. The police presence is a stark reminder of the recent occurrences, leaving many questioning the safety of their surroundings.
Earlier in the week, on Thursday night, a shooting took place at a home on Purple Thistle Lane in east Charlotte, injuring four individuals. The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. and left three people with life-threatening injuries, while a fourth had injuries that were not life-threatening. Adding to the shock, the suspect involved in this shooting was reportedly one of the injured.
Details regarding the home revealed that it was shared by seven children, two teenagers, and six adults. Police had been alerted to this residence multiple times prior to the shooting, including a domestic disturbance that occurred just days before the event and various reports of threats made inside the home. This information has residents rattled, as the neighborhood is generally perceived as quiet and safe.
In a separate event, a tragic scene unfolded outside Coyote Joe’s nightclub on Saturday night when an officer shot and killed a 28-year-old man named Lucas Armstrong. Police responded to reports of a man in distress who was reportedly holding a gun to his head. Officers attempted to communicate with Armstrong, but the situation escalated into gunfire, resulting in his death on-site.
Armstrong was known to have worked as a security guard for the nightclub, adding layers of shock to a community already on edge. The name of the officer involved has not yet been released, but they have been placed on paid administrative leave while investigations proceed.
This string of violence comes on the heels of a troubling incident involving a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer, Onesiphorus Bernard Williams. Williams was arrested on Christmas Eve for allegedly pointing a gun at two individuals, including an ex-wife. After being charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault, he was released on bail but was taken into custody again shortly thereafter for violating a domestic violence protective order.
Concerns about Williams’ behavior have been raised, especially by Chief Johnny Jennings, who emphasized that such actions undermine the integrity and trust of the police department. Williams, who has been a part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department since October 2022, is assigned to the South Division and has caused alarm over his conduct.
