Charlotte’s Commitment to Representation: A Local Business Story

In the vibrant city of Charlotte, one woman’s journey echoes the importance of access, opportunity, and representation in the field of education communication. Sharise Johnson, who has dedicated her career to creating pathways for others, is an inspiring figure whose foundation is built on understanding and addressing the needs of her community.

A Childhood Inspired by Generosity

Growing up in a suburban area just outside of Atlanta, Sharise’s parents were passionate about education. They often welcomed her classmates to their home, ensuring that kids from less-privileged backgrounds enjoyed enriching experiences. “Even though we didn’t have a ton,” Sharise recalls, “being able to open up folks’ eyes to opportunity and access was core.” Drawing from her parents’ commitment, she learned early on that education could be a powerful tool for change, especially for those who face systemic barriers.

Defying Expectations

Having a mother who was a trailblazer in education provided Sharise with not just inspiration but also important lessons about hard work and privilege. “As a Black child, I needed to work twice as hard as my counterparts,” she reflects, emphasizing that these conversations were a constant presence in their home. Her mother was the first Black teacher of the year in their town, paving the way for future generations. It was crucial for Sharise to appreciate her upbringing and use that insight to help others find their paths.

College Dreams and Realizations

After navigating high school, where she often felt out of place, she found solace and camaraderie at Hampton University, a historically Black college. “It was eye-opening to be around dedicated students of color who shared similar experiences,” she explains. This environment taught her that opportunity is available but often hidden, requiring those in the know to help lift others up.

A Career in Communications

Initially, Sharise envisioned a career as a news reporter. She landed a role in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but realized it wasn’t her passion. Instead, returning to her roots in Atlanta allowed her to delve into the realm of education communications, particularly after a challenging chapter for Atlanta Public Schools had caught national attention.

Creating a Seat at the Table

Through her journey, Sharise discovered a glaring gap in education communications—specifically a lack of diversity among those crafting messages meant for Black and brown families. Recognizing the importance of representation, she founded SMJ Communications in 2019 to bridge this gap. “If I don’t take on that task, all of this is really for nothing,” she emphasizes passionately.

Building an Inclusive Team

As she started her consulting firm, she made it a priority to hire a diverse team that reflected the communities they served. “Not only do we need experts in education, but we need communicators who understand cultural nuances,” she states. This approach has allowed her firm to resonate with families who are accustomed to receiving information through personal connections rather than traditional channels.

Intentional Communication Strategies

Sharise’s method revolves around strategic communication. “At its essence, the power of good communication is knowing who you’re speaking to, what you want to say, and what you want them to do with that information,” she explains. This straightforward understanding helps ensure that messages sent to families are clear, concise, and impactful.

Growing Alongside Personal Life

Sharise has had her hands full managing her growing business while also raising three young daughters under the age of five. “I birthed three babies and a business all at the same time!” she cheerfully notes. Balancing these responsibilities has enriched her resolve to advocate for equitable access to education and communication. For her, this work is not just important—it’s nonnegotiable.

A Bright Future

In a dynamic city like Charlotte, Sharise Johnson’s efforts exemplify a commitment to community and representation that can lead to transformative outcomes. By dedicating herself to the cause and nurturing talent within her business, she is paving the way for future leaders in education communications. With every story shared and every opportunity created, she is opening doors that wider audiences can step through, taking strides towards a more equitable future.
