Charlotte, NC – Get ready, everyone! The Children’s Theatre of Charlotte is thrilled to announce the return of “Grace for President,” an inspiring musical adapted from Kelly DiPucchio’s beloved New York Times bestselling children’s book. After a long pause, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this delightful production is ready to hit the stage once again, shining a bright light on the values of leadership and empowerment for kids aged 6 and up.
“Grace for President” tells the charming story of Grace Campbell, a spirited young girl who decides to run for class president. Throughout her campaign, Grace discovers not only her own voice but also the importance of democracy and civic engagement. This heartwarming narrative serves as a gentle nudge for children to reach for the stars, make a positive difference in their communities, and believe wholeheartedly in themselves.
Taking the helm as Director, Alicia Tafoya expressed her excitement for bringing this impactful show back. “The message of empowerment embedded in this show is so important today, not just for young girls but for everyone,” Tafoya said. “It’s a reminder that one person can have a tremendous impact, and elevating others along the way is just as important as the personal journey.”
This year’s revival features a vibrant cast, with the talented Chanel Thomas stepping into Grace’s shoes. New exciting faces like Aaron Marsh, Finnegan McCarthy, and Taylor Dee Spencer join the ensemble, while former students of the School of Theatre Training, Hannah Bridger and Zakary Clausell-Santos, are making their professional debuts on the charming Wells Fargo Playhouse stage.
The production will also wow audiences with new staging and designs inspired by the book’s whimsical illustrations. The set has been streamlined, and classroom lessons have been reimagined, making it easier to transition between scenes at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School while keeping the pace lively and engaging.
“This production builds on the strengths of the original, while adding new layers of creativity and engagement,” Tafoya emphasized, excited about what the audience will experience.
In a remarkable move, this production boasts an all-female creative team, which Tafoya shares has significantly influenced the show’s perspective. “I’ve never worked with an all-female team before, and it’s been an incredible experience. Our shared perspective has truly supported Grace’s journey in the show,” she remarked proudly.
The wonderful thing about “Grace for President” is that it’s not just a fun musical; it opens the floor for discussions on youth empowerment and civic duty. The lively music, ranging from barbershop quartet to Hamilton-inspired rap, is guaranteed to have you and your family dancing in your seats!
This is the perfect chance to rediscover the values of kindness and action through the eyes of a young girl who is ready to change the world and make a difference.
