Hold onto your shopping carts, folks! Indian Land, a charming area in South Carolina, is about to become even more shopper-friendly with the arrival of a new Costco store! The popular retailer has just made waves by purchasing a whopping 27.9 acres for approximately $6.4 million. This prime piece of land is situated on Charlotte Highway, inside the mixed-use development known as The Exchange.
Costco has some ambitious plans for its new location, with plans for a sprawling 160,000-square-foot warehouse store that will come with an adjoining fuel center. According to Yates Dunaway, a senior vice president at Crosland Southeast, the project is targeting a late 2025 opening. It’s a win-win situation, as Dunaway explains, “For us, due to the size, it was a great user for the parcel size and depth.”
There’s buzzing excitement in the air, especially among local officials. Steve Harper, the chair of Lancaster County Council, is thrilled about the benefits Costco will bring. Harper noted, “The brand is well-known across the country, and its presence will not only offer great products and services to our residents, but also contribute significantly to the local economy through job creation and increased tax revenue.” How fantastic is that?
In July 2023, the Lancaster County Council gave the green light for the rezoning of the Costco site, and permits have already been issued! However, Costco is keeping mum on specific details about future openings beyond three months from now, so don’t expect too much inside info just yet. For what it’s worth, the new Indian Land location didn’t make it onto the retailer’s list of upcoming store openings. But with the construction set to begin, it’s clear that big changes are on the way.
Costco is part of a larger picture as The Exchange project unfolds. Spearheaded by Crosland and its investment partner FCP, this 130-acre project will not only house Costco but will also include a 50,000-square-foot Lowes Foods grocery store and 20,000 square feet of retail space. Lowes is anticipated to open its doors by late 2025 as well. If that weren’t enough, Dunaway shared that there are plans for further development, including a 400-unit luxury garden apartment community, projected to break ground in mid-2025.
And there’s more! Taylor Morrison is working on final permits for a total of 320 for-sale townhomes. The area is quickly blossoming into a vibrant hub for both residents and businesses, thanks to its strong community, great schools, and easy access to transportation.
Not to be left out, nearby developments are also taking shape. CrossRidge Center, a *massive 190-acre mixed-use project*, is currently underway along U.S. 521, which boasts a retail component expected to be worth around $150 million, anchored by a Target store. Wow, the buzz just doesn’t stop!
With Costco paving the way for exciting growth in Indian Land, it’s safe to say that local residents have a lot to look forward to in the coming years. Between new job opportunities, shopping conveniences, and vibrant community enhancements, the future is looking bright for this charming area. So, who’s ready to hit the aisles of Costco?”
