Charlotte, get excited! The incredibly talented and multifaceted Eddie Izzard is heading to town with her unique blend of comedy and drama. With a career spanning over 35 years, Izzard is ready to take the stage at the Knight Theater on October 19 as part of her Remix Tour, celebrating her amazing journey in the world of entertainment.
Starting her comedy journey back in 1987 at London’s famed Comedy Store, Izzard has skyrocketed to fame with her distinctive style. In a recent interview, she shared a delightful memory from a diner in North Carolina. She recounted, “One of the waiting staff recognized me and quoted one of my bits from ‘Death Star Canteen.’ It’s amazing how my work has traveled all the way to North Carolina!”
As a devoted comedian, actress, and activist, Izzard has lived a life filled with creativity and exploration. She has showcased her talent on stages worldwide, from intimate venues to colossal theaters like Madison Square Garden. “I’ve been lucky enough to perform in all 50 states,” she says, recalling how audiences everywhere have embraced her comedy.
Izzard’s path hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Despite initial hesitations about performing in the South, she discovered that audiences in places like Texas were eager to enjoy her shows. She reminisces about selling out shows quickly and believes, “There are groovy people everywhere who just want to enjoy a good laugh.”
Throughout her career, Izzard has mastered the art of adapting her performance style to suit the venue. She cheerfully compares small shows to “speed boats” and larger venues to “ocean liners.” “You have to adjust the flow of your comedy based on the audience size,” she explains. “It’s a nice dynamic and something I really enjoy,” she adds enthusiastically.
Beyond stand-up comedy, Izzard has lent her voice to animated features like Netflix’s “Green Eggs & Ham”, where she played a comedic villain. She expresses her love for voice acting, citing it as another playground for her creativity. “It’s a great place to experiment with different voices,” she reflects. Izzard is also in the process of developing her own series—what a treat that will be!
As part of her ongoing journey, Izzard has also taken on classic theatrical roles. Currently, she’s been giving a fresh twist to the iconic play “Hamlet”, where she plays multiple characters herself. Her performances have received rave reviews, highlighting her dedication to honoring female characters like Ophelia and Gertrude. “Playing all the characters is a weird thing, but it’s truly rewarding,” she says.
After her Remix Tour in the U.S., Izzard plans to bring her rendition of “Hamlet” worldwide, with stops in places like Australia and New Zealand. She’ll continue blending comedy and drama, taking her art to new heights. She’s also got a role in Netflix’s show “Kaos” in the pipeline, proving there’s no slowing down for this powerhouse performer!
