Exciting Changes Coming to Charlotte’s Parks!

Hey there, Charlotte! If you’ve been craving more outdoor fun in our parks, you’re in for a treat. Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is jumping into action to add a bunch of cool features that you’ve all been asking for. This means more skate parks, dog parks, spray grounds, and even pickleball courts are on the way! Can I get a round of applause?

Why Are These Changes Happening?

Here’s the scoop: historically, the county has focused mainly on funding parks and trails, which is great and all, but it’s high time for some fresh amenities too. According to senior planner Katie Lloyd, they’re all ears when it comes to your feedback on expanding existing parks and adding those highly requested elements that our city has been missing out on for too long.

Driving the News: Renaissance Park Skate Park Expansion

Let’s talk about one exciting project in particular: the Renaissance Park skate park, located at 1536 W. Tyvola Road, is set to get a major facelift! This is your chance to weigh in on what the new design should look like. The county is gathering public feedback, and if you’ve got ideas, you can submit your thoughts by November 15. This is a golden opportunity for skaters to shape their playground! So, don’t miss out!

By the Numbers: Big Bucks for Big Changes

Now, let’s get down to some numbers. Back in June, the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners gave the green light to a whopping $429.5 million for Park and Recreation capital projects that will roll out from fiscal year 2025 through 2029. Talk about a serious investment in our community!

What’s on the Agenda?

Here’s what you can look forward to:

• Skate Parks will be added to Nevin Park, Shuffletown Park, and Idlewild Road Park. Plus, the current skate park at Renaissance will expand, and improvements are coming to Kilborne Park and Grayson SkatePark!
• Dog Parks: More barking fun awaits with new dog parks at North Charlotte Park and McKee Road Park. The existing parks at W.R. Davie and Renaissance will also receive upgrades, giving your furry friends the space to run wild!
• Spray Grounds: Get ready to cool off! New spray grounds are set to pop up at Sugaw Creek Park, Clanton Park, Thomas McAlister Winget Park, and Shuffletown Park. Perfect for those hot summer days!
• Pickleball Courts: If you’re a pickleball enthusiast, get excited! New courts will be built at Colonel Francis Beatty Park, Elon Park, Nevin Park, and Robert L. Smith Park. Time to channel your inner champion!
