In a troubling turn of events on the morning of January 1, a fatal collision involving a CATS bus has shaken the community of East Charlotte. The incident unfolded around 8:30 a.m. on Central Avenue, right at the intersection with Albemarle Road.
Sadly, the crash took the life of 50-year-old Edgar Sanchez, who, according to reports, was not wearing a seatbelt at the moment the accident occurred. It is reported that a 19-year-old named Ofren Parra Guzman was behind the wheel of a 2007 Honda Civic at the time of the crash. Guzman was allegedly speeding when he struck the rear of the bus. At the moment of impact, Sanchez was a passenger in Guzman’s car, alongside a third passenger, 21-year-old Gustavo Gonzalez Fuemayor.
The damage to the CATS bus was assessed at approximately $10,000. Authorities have not yet finalized the potential charges against Guzman, but ongoing investigations by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) are keeping them busy as they piece together exactly what happened that morning.
