Former Charlotte Coach Facing Indecent Liberties Charges Amid Disturbing Allegations

Disturbing Allegations Surface in Charlotte: Former Coach Charged with Indecent Liberties

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The community of Charlotte is grappling with some unsettling news after a former coach was accused of inappropriate conduct with a student-athlete. Matthew Elliott, 39, who once coached cross country at Charlotte Country Day School, is now facing serious charges following an investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

What Happened?

It all began when a former student, who is now an adult, reported to authorities that Elliott had engaged in flirtatious behavior and made several unwanted advances towards her during her time at the school. The allegations prompted a thorough investigation, leading CMPD to conclude there was evidence of an inappropriate relationship between Elliott and the victim.

In a swift response, investigators arrested Elliott at his home on Wednesday, after which he was transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. The legal ramifications for Elliott are significant, as he faces two counts of indecent liberties with a female student, a charge that is taken very seriously in North Carolina.

A Message to the Community

In light of these troubling events, the school reached out to families with an important message. Interim Head of School David Mancos communicated the seriousness of the situation, stating, “We are reaching out to inform you of a recent disturbing development concerning an employee.” He reassured families that following the school’s protocols, Elliott was placed on administrative leave as soon as the allegations were brought to their attention. The school has ended his employment and barred him from campus.

“We have not received other reports of misconduct about Mr. Elliott from other alums or current students,” Mancos mentioned, providing a sense of relief. However, he urged anyone who might have further information to come forward and report it to the authorities.

Support for the Community

The school also emphasized their commitment to the safety and well-being of students, saying, “We understand that this news is difficult, and we are here to support students, families, alumni, faculty, and staff.” They are making school counselors available to talk with anyone in need of support during this challenging time. Mancos concluded, “We know how deeply you care about your children’s safety, and their well-being remains our highest priority.”

How You Can Help

If anyone has more information regarding this case, they are encouraged to reach out to Detective Heather Wyatt at 704-432-1723. Additionally, there is an opportunity for anonymous tips to be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or via their website. Every piece of information can be vital in such cases, and the community is urged to speak up, if they can help.

Unrelated Case Also Raises Eyebrows

This case isn’t the only troubling incident in the area recently. In September, a different coach, Daszmar Lockhart, was also accused of serious sex crimes involving several young girls. According to CMPD, these allegations spanned from 2018 to 2020, with charges including statutory rape and indecent liberties with a child. These developments have stirred conversations about the safety of student-athletes and the conduct of authority figures in educational environments.

As more details emerge from both cases, the community of Charlotte is left reflecting on the importance of safeguarding students and maintaining trust within educational institutions. It’s a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and open lines of communication between students, parents, and school staff.
