Charlotte, NC – A school bus carrying students was struck by gunfire on Wednesday afternoon, leaving one student injured from broken glass. The incident occurred around 3 PM on the 8800 block of East W. T. Harris Blvd., at the intersection with Idlewild Road, south of Albemarle Road.
According to authorities from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), there were approximately 30 students on the bus at the time of the shooting. Luckily, no students on board were shot. However, at least one student sustained injuries caused by glass shards from the shattered window. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) confirmed that two students were treated for cuts from the glass.
The shooting was described as a result of a dispute occurring outside the bus, which led to the gunfire. Principal Toni Perry of Albemarle Road Middle School sent a message to parents following the incident, noting the seriousness of the situation and stating that it involved bus number 1748. Perry reassured families by indicating that another bus was dispatched to provide transportation for the students.
Crisis counselors have been made available at the school for students needing support, indicating an awareness of the emotional toll such incidents can have on young individuals. This assistance underscores the school’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students during this challenging time.
In response to the shooting, CMPD did make an arrest related to the case, although details regarding the individual apprehended and the charges are yet to be disclosed. Investigators are continuing to piece together the circumstances surrounding the gunfire that endangered the students.
Parents and community members have expressed concern regarding safety in school zones, especially after such a violent event. The sight of a school bus implicated in gunfire raises significant alarm and emphasizes the urgent need for discussions surrounding safety measures for students, particularly during their travels to and from school.
The event serves as a stark reminder of the unexpected dangers that can permeate everyday life. In the aftermath, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, law enforcement, and the community are coming together to ensure that students receive the care and support they need. Although the physical injuries were minimal, the mental impact of this event could linger for those involved.
