Hey there, Charlotte! If you thought it was time to pack away your winter jackets, think again! This weekend, a hard freeze is set to hit our beautiful city as a polar air mass sweeps down from the north. Buckle up because it looks like temperatures are plunging into the deep freeze, and it could last for several days!
The National Weather Service has given us the heads-up that overnight low temperatures could drop into the mid to low 20s early next week. That’s cold enough to make anyone want to snuggle up under a warm blanket! In Mecklenburg County and surrounding areas, you can expect a hard freeze to greet you every morning. If you’re in the higher elevations of the mountains, especially above 3,500 feet, brace yourself for an extended period of below-freezing temperatures that could stretch all the way through Tuesday night.
So, what does the short-term forecast look like? Well, Friday’s high is only expected to hit a chilly 53 degrees, and on Saturday we’ll drop down to a nippy 49 degrees. Sunday may try to warm up a bit to 52 degrees, but don’t get too excited—Monday and Tuesday are looking like 45 and 44 degrees, respectively. It won’t be until Wednesday when we start to thaw out a little with a predicted high of 49 degrees and a little warmer at 57 degrees on Thursday!
As for nighttime lows, you should prepare for some seriously chilly nights with readings like 24 degrees early Saturday, dipping to 23 degrees by Tuesday morning. If you thought November was supposed to be mild, remember that the historic average high for this time of year in Charlotte is 76 degrees—clearly, we’re in for a shock!
Logically, you’re probably thinking about how to keep warm during this icy spell. Rummage through your closets for those winter essentials! Experts suggest you grab your mittens or gloves, dress in layers, and make sure to keep your pets cozy as well. Pets can feel the cold, too, and it’s our job to ensure they’re warm and snuggly!
Once we get through this stint of cold weather, the forecast suggests we might see some slight warming as we move into December. However, Monday night is expected to be the coldest, with lows in the teens to low 20s common across the area. With temperatures this chilly, maybe it’s time to whip up some hot cocoa and settle in for a cozy movie night!
So, Charlotte, get ready for some arctic weather! Stay warm, plan your outfits in advance, and don’t forget to check on your neighbors to ensure they’re staying warm as well. This weekend’s polar plunge might just remind us how much we love the warmth of those sunny days. Below-freezing temperatures may be in store, but brighter days are on the horizon as we head into a new month!
