Charlotte Jack in the Box Receives Shocking ‘B’ Health Grade Amid Multiple Violations

Charlotte Gets the Scoop on Health Grades: A Recent ‘B’ Grade Raises Eyebrows

In the bustling city of Charlotte, residents often enjoy the quick convenience of fast food, but it seems that one establishment may need to step up its game when it comes to cleanliness and health standards. Recently, a local Jack in the Box on Pineville Matthews Road was handed a ‘‘B’’ grade by the Mecklenburg County Health Department after inspectors uncovered several health violations during their inspection on September 19.

What’s Cooking at Jack in the Box?

Jack in the Box, located at 7725 Pineville Matthews Rd, received a score of 88%, which, while not terrible, is on the lower side of acceptable. Inspectors reported a series of issues, starting with some rather unpleasant findings: “several different dead bugs” were spotted around the cash register at the first drive-thru window. To add to the discomfort, they also noted “several flies” buzzing around inside the restaurant. Yikes!

But that’s not all; the inspection report indicated other violations that raised eyebrows as well:

  • An employee was found handling clean utensils without washing their hands first.
  • Utensils were discovered with grease and food residue still clinging to them.
  • A freezer door had a torn gasket.
  • Heavy grease buildup was noted on cooking equipment surfaces.
  • Broken floor tiles and low grout between tiles around fryers were also cited.

This marks the first time Jack in the Box has received a B grade, causing many frequent patrons to wonder about the overall hygiene of their go-to burger joint.

More Health Grades in the City

Interestingly, during the same week of inspections from September 14-20, more than 100 restaurants were graded, with only two receiving a B grade. The other restaurant, Skyland Family Restaurant located at 4544 South Blvd, scored 81% during an inspection on September 16. This establishment was noted for violations including the presence of flying pests and food residue on kitchen equipment. Some of these issues were resolved during the inspection, though it’s worth noting that the restaurant had previously scored 90% back in March 2024.

Many people might not know that in North Carolina, each restaurant is assigned a sanitation score, which can be seen as a quick measure of the establishment’s adherence to health guidelines designed to prevent food-borne illnesses. Most diners are familiar with seeing those sanitation grade cards displayed prominently in restaurants they visit. It’s a simple system: a score of 90% or higher earns an A grade, while anything between 80% and 89% gets a B.

What Happens if Scores Drop?

It’s also crucial to note that if a restaurant falls below a score of 70%, its permit is immediately revoked. This system ensures that customers have access to clean and safe dining experiences while dining out in Charlotte.
