With rising homelessness statistics, efforts from both SOCM and the Salvation Army aim to secure a brighter future for affected individuals. Community volunteers also play a pivotal role in delivering aid to those in need. Together, they strive to create a more stable environment for families in Charlotte.

Charlotte Fights Back Against Homelessness With Local Nonprofit’s Help

In the heart of Charlotte, North Carolina, a local nonprofit organization is stepping up to tackle the escalating homelessness crisis in the city. The Save Our Children Movement (SOCM) is on a mission to provide vital resources and support for families who have found themselves living in a hotel, which has become a last resort against homelessness.

Kay McMullens is one of those residents currently navigating life in this transitional setup. Since arriving in April 2023, she describes her time spent there as a “waiting room for real change.” Living in a hotel designed for temporary stays can feel like living in limbo, as Kay looks forward to moving into a permanent home while grappling with the emotional and physical challenges that homelessness brings.

Empowering Families Through Resources

At the forefront of SOCM’s efforts is CEO Rodney McGill, who is dedicated to ensuring families like Kay’s receive the support they desperately need. Under his leadership, SOCM has established programs that cater specifically to children and families living in transitional housing. Their goal is to create safe spaces for kids to complete their homework, receive meals, and develop a sense of stability.

But SOCM doesn’t stop at just meeting basic needs. The organization goes above and beyond by providing mentorship and crime prevention services, drawing upon the real-life experiences of those who know the struggle first-hand. This comprehensive approach is essential, especially as many residents battle with feelings of shame and hopelessness surrounding their current situations.

Charlotte’s Rising Homelessness Crisis

Moreover, John Kelly, who has experienced homelessness himself, indicates that around 25 individuals currently lack shelter in his vicinity and emphasizes the urgent need for the city to prioritize proper shelter solutions. This is compounded by unfortunate statistics revealing that homelessness in Charlotte has risen by 3% as of 2025, translating to approximately 2,784 individuals living without homes in Mecklenburg County from mid-2023 to mid-2024.

Planned Expansions and Community Efforts

287 individuals each night and has specially designed rooms for those with mental health issues or disabilities.

A Helping Hand from Volunteers

150 individuals experiencing homelessness in the county, further illuminating the urgent need for effective solutions.

Moving Forward Together

The responsibility lies on all of us to lend a helping hand, show compassion, and create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. After all, a strong community supports each other and walks together toward lasting solutions.
