CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As the temperatures drop into the low 40s overnight, the issue of homelessness in Charlotte takes on a new urgency. Currently, there are 3,169 individuals experiencing homelessness in this vibrant city, and among them, 1,145 children are battling the harsh realities of life without stable shelter. One family, in particular, is creating a small life in the face of overwhelming odds.
If you happen to be driving down I-77, you might notice two small tents located near the Clanton Road exit. This is where Ed Adams and his family of six have turned temporary living into a makeshift home. Ed, a father of four, shares the family’s story of how they found themselves in this situation.
Once the proud owners of a trucking company, Ed and his wife found the constant driving tiring. Following a series of jobs that didn’t quite work out for the family, they initially moved into a van. However, after three years of struggling to make ends meet, the family van met its end, forcing them to adapt to their new reality.
In search of stability, Ed turned to camping, leading his family to sleep on sidewalks and under bridges before settling at their current location. They’ve been at this camp site for nearly a month now, and according to Ed, it’s not all bad. “We chose this spot because of the walking distance to the library and the YMCA, and because we could take showers at the YMCA,” he explains with a hint of relief.
Despite the unusual living conditions, Ed makes sure to maintain a semblance of normalcy. Every day, he takes time to homeschool his children, aiming to provide them with some structure amidst their chaotic surroundings. “It’s important for me to keep their education going no matter the challenges we face,” he emphasizes.
As cars rush by, some commuters take note of the family, offering a glimpse into the compassion that exists in Charlotte. One driver, who chose to remain anonymous, shared, “They don’t bother nobody. They’re real good people. The kids are well-mannered.” Another passerby echoed similar sentiments, noting, “They’re doing what they can to make it.” It’s heartwarming to witness how a community can rally—albeit silently—around those in need.
Ed’s situation is not an isolated case; the numbers are steadily climbing. According to data from a Mecklenburg County organization, the number of people experiencing homelessness has increased by 553 from 2023. It’s a stark reminder of the struggles many families face in a city that prides itself on growth and opportunity.
Though the family’s basic needs are somewhat met with access to showers and educational resources, Ed acknowledges that the chilly weather poses significant challenges. “We really need blankets and warm clothes as the temperatures drop,” he states, a simple plea that underscores their daily battle for comfort and safety.
Local authorities like the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and Social Services have been checking in on the family, but specific details are still unclear. Ed mentions that these visits stemmed from phone calls made by concerned citizens, showing how community members are getting involved when they see something as serious as homelessness.
As the evening sky envelops Charlotte, the city glows with its usual hustle and bustle. Yet, amidst this vibrant life, stories like that of Ed and his family remind us of the quiet struggles faced by many. Community support, awareness, and compassion might just be the keys to evolving conversations about homelessness in Charlotte.
