CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The winds of Hurricane Helene may have howled through North Carolina, but the spirit of community has proven to be even stronger. In the wake of the storm’s impact, folks from across the state have stepped up in a big way to help those who were hardest hit. It’s heartwarming to see how people come together during tough times.
This past Sunday, Charlotte residents rolled out of bed before dawn, ready to make a difference. Among them was Ernie Adler, a familiar face in the local community, who decided to hit the road along with his son and a dedicated group of volunteers from World Central Kitchen. These passionate individuals set out for Asheville, full of hope and determination, although they weren’t exactly sure what challenges lay ahead.
Ernie is no newcomer to such humanitarian efforts. In June 2022, he spent time in Poland, serving meals to Ukrainian refugees fleeing the horrors of war. Inspired by that experience, Ernie returned to his home state of North Carolina with a mission. He wanted to bring the same level of support to his fellow Carolinians during this trying time.
Leaving their homes in Charlotte just after 3 a.m., Ernie and his son arrived in Asheville just before 7 a.m. It didn’t take long for them to dive into their work, which initially had them on warehouse duty. But as the day unfolded, their tasks shifted towards something much more impactful. Teaming up with volunteers from various backgrounds, they quickly transformed their efforts into a meal preparation frenzy.
By the end of the day, the group, fueled by camaraderie and a shared purpose, managed to cook and package an incredible amount of food. In fact, they prepared enough to feed approximately 22,000 people in need! The feeling of contributing to something larger than oneself is truly a powerful motivator, and it showed in every plate they prepared.
Charlotte has always been a city known for its sense of community, and this recent event serves as another reminder of how residents come together during challenging times. The camaraderie witnessed among volunteers is a testament to the enduring human spirit and the unwavering love residents have for one another.
While the devastation from the hurricane is still fresh, stories of kindness and generosity shine like bright stars in the dark night. From large organizations to individual efforts, many are stepping up to help rebuild lives and provide for those who have lost so much.
