Charlotte Hosts WNC Hurricane Relief Potters Market to Support Local Artisans

Charlotte Comes Together for WNC Hurricane Relief Potters Market

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact on western North Carolina, the community is joining forces to uplift the artisans who have been hit hard by the disaster. Artists in the Carolinas usually thrive during the fall tourism season, but many popular events, such as the Spruce Pine Potters Market, were unfortunately *canceled* due to the aftermath of the hurricane. This cancellation leaves many skilled artisans in a precarious financial situation, as they normally generate an astonishing 60%-70% of their income during this bustling time of year.

But fret not, because this weekend, artists from the region are getting a chance to showcase their hard work at the WNC Hurricane Relief Potters Market. Mark your calendars for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Park Expo and Conference Center. More than 30 talented potters from western North Carolina will be ready and excited to welcome shoppers looking to support their craft and community.

Finding Hope After Hardship

Julie Wiggins, a potter hailing from Avery County, expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of support. “We are feeling so overwhelmed by all the support that everyone has rallied to try to make, allow us to get back on track and to *make up for our lost time*,” Wiggins said. The event is a collaborative labor of love, organized by the Rhe Mint Museum, Spruce Pine Potters Market, NC Pottery Center, Odyssey Clayworks, Potters of Madison County, and Toe River Arts District—all of whom are committed to helping the artisans regain their footing after the storm.

Artistry Meets Resilience

Vince Long, a volunteer instrumental in putting the event together, remarked on the rich pottery heritage that North Carolina holds. “North Carolina has really strong pottery traditions, and they’re doing a great job of keeping this art form alive and thriving. But, you know, they’re also trying to make a living and they need that support,” Long said.

It’s crucial to note that every potter participating in the Potters Market has suffered personally from the hurricane, be it through damage to their homes, studios, or a loss of income due to canceled events. Long explained, “A lot of these potters dropped everything in the hurricane, and even if they didn’t have personal losses, they dedicated themselves to helping their communities recover.”

Community at the Heart of Healing

Wiggins also quickly became engaged in hurricane relief efforts. She has been crafting “NC STRONG” ornaments to raise money for those affected, and noted how artists instinctively stepped into a supportive role after the disaster. “We were out of work, but we all got together as makers to help our community,” Wiggins reflected, demonstrating how *artists led the way* in recovery efforts.

With the help of donations, Wiggins supported over 300 families shortly after the storm struck with essentials such as food, water, and cleaning supplies. The recent creations she will showcase at the Potters Market reflect a profound emotional journey; she expressed that they “carry a different energy,” born from a time of struggle and healing.

Join the Cause!

Admission to this heartwarming event is absolutely free, with no ticket needed. However, donations are welcomed and appreciated! Proceeds from all sales will go directly to the artists, while any donations will benefit organizations focused on further aiding hurricane relief in western North Carolina, as chosen by the participating potters.

As Vince Long put it, “I think that everyone will feel an appreciation for the resilience of all these folks, to keep going at a time when it’s been just really hard.” Supporting these artisans isn’t just about purchasing pottery; it’s about embracing their stories and their *enduring spirit*.

With the community rallying support and determination, the love for craftsmanship blends beautifully with the overwhelming sense of unity in Charlotte. As Julie Wiggins voiced, “Our hearts are expanding and we feel so supported by our community — it’s really something.” Don’t miss your chance to be part of this remarkable gathering!
