Greensboro Welcomes Jaylen Cross: A Commitment to UNC Charlotte

Greensboro, NC – In a significant move for both the player and the program, Jaylen Cross, a three-star point guard from Caldwell Academy, announced his commitment to play basketball for UNC Charlotte. The 6-foot-4 senior made the announcement recently, marking a notable addition to his recruiting class as he joins the growing ranks of talented athletes committed to the 49ers.

Who is Jaylen Cross?

Cross, who hails from Greensboro, NC, has made quite an impact in the basketball community. Currently ranked as the nation’s No. 128 overall prospect, he is recognized as the No. 17 point guard and the seventh-best recruit from North Carolina in the 2025 recruiting cycle according to a comprehensive ranking system that combines data from major recruiting platforms.

Why UNC Charlotte?

When discussing his decision, Cross emphasized the abundance of opportunities at UNC Charlotte. He mentioned, “I chose UNC Charlotte for how much opportunity there is for me to learn and grow, but also from a development side of things, because I know development is huge for them and they get their players better.” This focus on player development is a crucial factor for many recruits, and it clearly played a role in Cross’s choice.

The Coaching Connection

One of the critical elements that influenced his decision was the strong relationship he developed with the coaching staff. “It was the relationship that was built and how genuine it was,” Cross explained. “It wasn’t just Coach Fearne that built a relationship, but it was every coach down to player development and player personnel. Each person on staff reached out to me and built a relationship and that trust for me.”

What Type of Player is Cross?

In assessing his playing style, Cross described himself as a versatile player who can contribute in various ways on the court. “My game and play style is versatile. I can defend well, play off and on the ball on offense. I’m selfless, I’m willing to see the guy next to me succeed and I work hard on both ends.” This selfless approach and adaptability will surely be assets for the 49ers as they look to strengthen their team.

Looking Ahead

As Cross prepares to join the 49ers, he has a clear message for the fans in Charlotte: “A message I have for Charlotte fans is that I’m looking forward to coming to work and win games in Halton Arena.” His enthusiasm suggests that he is ready to contribute and be a vital part of the team’s success.
