Mark your calendars because this year’s festivities are packed with seven full days of cultural events and meaningful discussions, all set to honor the rich heritage of Black Americans.
For those who might not know, Kwanzaa is an annual celebration that runs from December 26 to January 1. It shines a spotlight on the values and principles of African culture and aims to bring families and communities together. Each day of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of the seven principles that guide the celebration. So, let’s dive into these principles and their corresponding dates!
All the action kicks off nightly from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at the welcoming Greenville Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, located at 6116 Monteith Drive. But that’s not all—starting from December 27 through December 31, extra events will also take place at the Movement School Freedom Elementary Campus, located at 2701 Freedom Drive. So, you have multiple opportunities to join in on the fun!
And let’s not forget the African Marketplace! Running from December 26 to December 31, the Marketplace will be open for business before and after the celebrations each day. It will be your chance to discover unique crafts, delicious food, and beautiful art from the local community. The Marketplace hours are from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM and then again from 8:30 PM to 9:15 PM. However, make note that on January 1, the Marketplace will be closed as that day is set aside for reflection and contemplation.
This year’s Kwanzaa will be brimming with activities that embody the spirit of the principles. Expect to be swept away by drumming, dancing, spoken word performances, and thoughtful discussions that explore the history and significance of Kwanzaa. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with others while celebrating the richness of African-American culture.
This Kwanzaa, Charlotte is ready to come together in unity, purpose, and creativity. So gather your friends and family, immerse yourself in the cultural events and marketplace, and let’s celebrate the heritage and traditions that Kwanzaa represents.
