Charlotte Launches Innovative MBA Program Focusing on Leadership and Real-World Experience

Charlotte Welcomes New Leadership-Oriented MBA Program at Queens University

In the heart of Charlotte, a fresh wave of enthusiasm is sweeping through the local business community, thanks to the newly redesigned McColl MBA program at Queens University. On September 17, a lively crowd gathered at the university to witness a remarkable conversation with business titan Hugh McColl Jr., the man behind the program’s name and its inspirational vision. This event, dubbed Legacy of Leadership, was not just a celebration of McColl’s remarkable journey but also a launchpad for the future leaders of business in Charlotte.

Insights from a Business Legend

Basking in the warm applause of attendees, McColl shared his wisdom and passion for cultivating leadership and entrepreneurship, two themes that resonate deeply throughout the revamped MBA program. McColl, who is known for his time as the CEO and chairman of Bank of America, emphasized a fundamental mantra: “Aim high and work hard.” According to him, success is not just a destination but a journey that requires nurturing and guidance.

McColl noted, “You have to lead people.” This principle emboldens the program’s mission to prepare students to take on real-world challenges comprehensively. He remarked, “One of the things that separates Queens from a lot of business schools is the emphasis we have on leadership and training people on how to help others be successful.” What a refreshing approach, focusing on lifting others as one rises!

A Tailored Learning Experience

The newly designed McColl MBA program breaks away from the traditional curriculum, placing the power back into the hands of the students. Denise Rotondo, Dean of the McColl School of Business, explained that students can customize their educational journey according to their career aspirations. Instead of a standardized program, students can choose from eight specializations, including executive coaching, entrepreneurship, finance, and leadership, among others. Each course is designed to be completed in just eight weeks, making the full 30-credit program attainable within a brisk 11 to 20 months.

This innovative approach reflects a keen awareness of the shifting demographic in graduate education, specifically targeting Gen Z students and professionals with two to eight years of experience, as Rotondo described. She noted, “That’s where the energy is and the momentum, so they’re ripe for graduate education.” The program aims to develop the next generation of business leaders, a goal dear to McColl’s heart.

Focus on Real-World Experience

It’s not just about books and lectures; Queens University wants students to get their hands dirty. The program emphasizes practical learning through real business projects and partnerships with local businesses, allowing students to engage with the community and its innovative spirit. According to Rotondo, “I think it’s so important in this moment, in the growth in Charlotte, to be part of what’s driving us forward.” The real-world exposure helps students connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications, a perfect blend for aspiring leaders.

A Vision for Charlotte’s Future

McColl sees the MBA program as a beacon of opportunity, designed to help young professionals ascend to successful careers and make meaningful contributions to Charlotte’s business landscape. He remarked, “The secret to being successful as a company is to surround yourself with good people and take care of them.” This belief underscores the program’s commitment to fostering an environment where students can become leaders who empower others to thrive.

In McColl’s vision, education is not solely about personal advancement; it is about “helping others” as well. By preparing the next wave of leaders, he hopes to create a more productive and profitable Charlotte for all. The audience left the event buzzing with inspiration and anticipation for the exciting future that the McColl MBA program promises.
