Historic Leeper-Wyatt Building Successfully Relocated in Charlotte After Over a Century

Historic Leeper-Wyatt Building Relocated in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On a sunny Thursday morning, history was literally on the move in Charlotte as the beloved Leeper-Wyatt building made its journey from one street to another. This classic structure, known for its charming character and rich heritage, has been a significant part of the South End and Dilworth neighborhoods since it first opened its doors in 1903.

The Big Move

The building finally made the move on September 12, after five weeks of preparation by a dedicated team of construction professionals. With careful planning and skilled hands, the crew delicately picked up the building from its location on South Boulevard and transported it about 750 feet to a new spot on Cleveland Avenue.

The process started with the dismantling of the building’s foundation, which was essential for the effective transport. Heavy beams were placed under the structure to support it, ensuring it would remain safe and stable during the journey. Phil Hanson, the supervisor for structural moves, shared an insight into the process, saying, “It’s pretty simple: one step at a time.”

Community Engagement

The move wasn’t just a task for the workers; it attracted a curious crowd of community members eager to witness this monumental event. Locals gathered to watch as the building smoothly glided along, marking another chapter in its long history. It’s not often that you get to see a building pick up and change addresses!

What Makes it Special

The Leeper-Wyatt building is highly regarded as the oldest brick retail building within the South End and Dilworth neighborhoods. Initially established as a two-story grocery store, it has witnessed over a century of change and growth in the bustling urban landscape around it. The character and architectural beauty of the building make it a true gem of the community.

Hanson emphasized the care taken during the relocation, highlighting the importance of going slowly and steadily to ensure safety. “Just take it slow, take it safe, the beams are heavy so make sure you don’t go too fast,” he reminded the crew.

Looking Ahead

As the Leeper-Wyatt building settles into its new home, many are left wondering about its future. Will it continue to serve as a retail space, or could it evolve into something new altogether? One thing is for sure: this building has generations of stories to tell, and its new location will only add to that narrative.

For those who couldn’t join in the excitement or who wish to revisit the event, various videos and images captured the building’s remarkable move. It’s an engaging story of preservation, community involvement, and the ongoing evolution of Charlotte’s urban landscape.

So, next time you find yourself wandering through the streets of Charlotte, take a moment to appreciate the Leeper-Wyatt building—now a little further from its original spot but still playing a vital role in the heart of a vibrant city. Here’s to many more years of history, change, and the memories yet to come!
