CHARLOTTE — On a sunny September day, a tragic event forever changed the life of two-year-old Leiloni Kindard. Just two weeks ago, she was released from the hospital after enduring a harrowing experience that left her family and friends in shock.
On September 15, 2023, Leiloni was innocently playing in her bedroom when a stray bullet struck the wall of her apartment in west Charlotte. This thoughtless act was the result of gunfire exchanged at the Evoke Living at Westerly Hills apartment complex, located near Wilkinson Boulevard. The chaos that ensued brought fear and heartbreak to countless families in the area.
“Just two days after the shooting, authorities arrested Demetrick McDonald, who reportedly fired 37 shots into the apartment complex — nine of which hit Leiloni’s apartment alone,” explained a police officer. Heartbreakingly, Leiloni was caught in the crossfire of senseless violence, but even at such a young age, she has shown incredible resilience.
Following the incident, Leiloni was admitted to a local hospital where she faced weeks of treatment and care. “Each day was a battle,” said her Aunt Ceira Parker, who visited her every single day. “I was crying every day. I worried about what she was going through.” Keeping hope alive during this challenging time required support from the community and countless prayers.
Leiloni, who is known for her cheerful spirit, didn’t fully grasp the severity of her situation. “I don’t think she really understands what happened,” Parker reflected. “We didn’t want to burden her with the details because she’s just a little girl.” In the midst of darkness, the community shone brightly, offering gifts and visiting Leiloni to uplift her spirits. Parker was especially touched by the officer who assisted in escorting Leiloni to the hospital and even brought her gifts to cheer her up.
Now that Leiloni is back home, she is ready to dive into the festive season. Chatting excitedly about Halloween, she told reporters about her plans. “Tomorrow, I’m going trick-or-treating!” Leiloni exclaimed with glee. When asked what kind of candy she hopes to collect, she boldly declared, “A hamburger!” Could anything be cuter? Her innocence shines through, reminding us all of the joy in simple things.
Aunt Ceira shared that Leiloni has also returned to one of her favorite places, Carowinds, just a week after being released from the hospital — a genuine testament to her fighting spirit. “It was her first time there before the incident, and we’re so grateful that the theme park officials offered to cover the cost of her visit. It meant the world to us,” Parker added.
Meanwhile, behind this story of recovery, there is also a fight for justice. Demetrick McDonald remains in jail with no bond, awaiting his next court appearance scheduled for February. The community is rallying together, hoping for accountability and safety for their neighborhoods.
As we look forward to Halloween and the joyous moments it can bring, our hearts remain with Leiloni and her family. Her journey from a traumatic event to celebrating life serves as a poignant reminder to cherish every moment and hold those we love closer than ever before.
Leiloni may still be small, but her indomitable spirit has inspired many, igniting a movement within the community to continue advocating for peace and understanding.
