CHARLOTTE — In a heartbreaking turn of events, a man lost his life following a shooting at an apartment complex in north Charlotte Wednesday afternoon. Residents and onlookers were left in shock as they witnessed the emergency services respond to the chaotic scene near Oaklawn Avenue around 4 p.m.
According to information from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, a flurry of shots rang out in the Double Oaks neighborhood, specifically on Oaklawn Avenue close to Ethel Guest Lane. It all started when dispatchers began receiving calls reporting the sound of gunfire, along with alerts about a vehicle ablaze in the vicinity. Officers rushed to the scene and arrived just minutes after the first calls, around 3:45 p.m.
Upon arriving, police discovered 25-year-old Carlos Leiva inside an SUV that had crashed and caught fire. The sight was alarming — first responders sprang into action, performing CPR on Leiva near the burning vehicle while Charlotte firefighters battled the flames that engulfed the SUV. Despite their efforts, it was a devastating moment when officers confirmed that Leiva had succumbed to his injuries.
Local residents were understandably rattled by the event. Quantrena Falls, a nearby resident, shared her feelings, saying, “I came out and it was the police, the ambulance, and everything was out here. It’s shocking especially when you have little ones.” Her sentiment reflects the sense of insecurity that often arises in neighborhoods when a violent act occurs, leaving many to wonder what could have led to such an incident.
As the sun began to set and the smoke cleared, the reality of the situation settled in. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has not released any information regarding potential suspects. Officers are actively engaging with witnesses who may have seen or heard something significant during the timeframe of the shooting. They are also scrutinizing surveillance footage from nearby locations in the hopes of piecing together what transpired.
In the midst of this unsettling event, CMPD is urging anyone with information about the shooting to step forward. They have placed a call out to the community, asking anyone who might have witnessed the incident or has relevant information to contact Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Every little bit of information could be crucial in helping officers understand the situation better and provide clarity for a grieving community.
This story is still developing, and as we learn more details, it remains a reminder of the fragility of life and the impact of violence on neighborhoods. With community safety in question and a life lost prematurely, many are left hoping for answers and solutions. Residents are coming together to support each other during this harrowing time, highlighting the strength of the community even amidst such turmoil.
As we await further updates, let’s remember to keep those affected in our thoughts and reach out to local resources if we find ourselves in need of support or if we want to contribute to the dialogue surrounding community safety.
