Carolina Music Legend Maurice Williams Passes Away at 86

Kannapolis, N.C. – A Deep Loss for the Music Community

Maurice Williams, a revered name in the world of R&B, has passed away at the age of 86. The former lead singer of Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs died on Tuesday, making headlines as a loss not only for his family and friends but for music lovers across the globe.

A Life Rooted in Music

Born on April 26, 1938, in Lancaster, South Carolina, Williams showed a passion for music early on, performing in church by the age of six. His journey in music took off during his high school years when he formed his first group, The Royal Charms.

Chart-Topping Hits

Williams’s big break came in 1957 with the release of “Little Darlin’.” He wrote and recorded this hit with his band, the Gladiolas, which reached #11 on the R&B Chart. The song later became a significant success when covered by the band The Diamonds.

In 1959, he changed the group’s name to Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, leading to the release of the iconic classic “Stay” in 1960. Remarkably, “Stay” became the shortest #1 song on the Billboard charts, clocking in at just 1 minute and 32 seconds. Its cultural relevance grew even more after being featured in the classic film Dirty Dancing in 1987.

Another hit, “May I,” released in 1961, also achieved million-seller status, solidifying Williams’s impact on the music scene.

A Legacy in Music

Throughout his remarkable career, which spanned more than six decades, Williams and his band not only recorded music but also toured extensively, sharing their passion with fans worldwide. His contributions to music earned him induction into both the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2007 and the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2010.

Survived by Loved Ones

Williams is survived by his wife, Emily, with whom he resided in Charlotte. His legacy continues to be remembered and celebrated by fans and fellow musicians alike.

A True Pioneer

As a pioneer of early rock n’ roll and rhythm and blues, Maurice Williams leaves behind a significant mark in the music industry, inspiring future generations with his timeless melodies and powerful performances. He will be sorely missed by the music community and beyond.
