Charlotte, NC – If you’re looking for stories of inspiration in our wonderful city, look no further than the story of Mauricio Lopez. As the only undergraduate student at UNC Charlotte focusing on pancreatic cancer research, Lopez is making waves—and not just in the lab!
It all began when Lopez decided he wanted to pursue a career in medicine. “I’ve always known I wanted to go into the pre-med field,” he shared with bright enthusiasm. Although he was unsure how to navigate his journey, he found a beacon of hope at UNC Charlotte. “Charlotte really stood out to me because of their ambitions for becoming a top research school,” he said with pride.
Diving into research during his second year, Lopez didn’t have it easy. He reached out to a myriad of professors in the biology department but faced several rejections. “It was tough at first, but I didn’t let it stop me. I was determined to keep pushing forward,” he remembered. That persistence paid off when he landed an interview for a lab position that intertwines with his passion for research.
Now in his third year, Lopez is knee-deep in his project focused on pancreatic cancer and vaccines. Although he’s unable to delve into specific details just yet, he hinted that a publication showcasing his work is on the horizon! “I take immense pride in this work because I’ve kept every promise I made to myself to reach this point,” Lopez said. Pride radiates through his words, showing how deeply committed he is to this critical cause.
Simultaneously, Lopez works at Novant Health in the Chest Pain Units and Cath Lab. This experience has been invaluable to him as he explains, “Being around the cardiology team has been a huge boost to my knowledge.” His mentorship under professionals like physician’s assistant Sophia Mitchell has opened his eyes to chronic diseases and the lifestyles that influence them, all while providing practical skills that enhance his academic journey.
Besides his rigorous research schedule, Lopez is committed to uplifting fellow students through his leadership role as the president of the recently established Charlotte Health-Link Society. This organization aims to close the gap of pre-health resources at UNC Charlotte by connecting students with real-life medical experiences. “It’s crucial to provide inclusive support for those interested in the medical field,” he explained.
The Health-Link Society offers numerous opportunities, such as clinical shadowing hours and certifications, making it a vibrant hub for aspiring healthcare professionals. “We’re essentially paving the path for future pre-health students,” he stated passionately.
Lopez is also an integral part of the Latin Honor Society, where he happily reflects on his growth as a leader since he took on an executive board position. “This was my first leadership role, and it has shaped who I am today,” he proudly noted.
His journey into medicine was fueled by personal experiences, including his grandfather’s heart condition that required international treatment—an ordeal that ignited his ambition to change the healthcare narrative. “Seeing my family struggle was a wake-up call that solidified my purpose,” he explained, especially when his mother was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, steering him further down his chosen path.
As his time at UNC Charlotte draws to a close, Lopez continues to encourage his classmates. “Don’t let anyone tell you what you can or cannot be. I wish I could show my past self how much better things would get,” he said, wrapping up his heartfelt message with gratitude for his family, mentors, and the opportunities at UNC Charlotte.
With a bright future ahead, one can only imagine how close this determined student will get to realizing his dreams. Charlotte is undoubtedly lucky to have a dedicated advocate like Mauricio Lopez among its ranks!
