Celebrating 25 Years of Creativity at the McColl Center in Charlotte

Charlotte is buzzing with excitement as the McColl Center celebrates its 25th anniversary this season. Over the years, this cultural gem has transformed the local arts scene and deeply engaged with the community in ways that continue to inspire and uplift.

A Historic Building with a Rich Past

Located in a stunning building that was once the First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, which was built way back in 1926 by renowned architect James Mackson McMichael, the McColl Center has been a part of Charlotte’s landscape for nearly a century. For 16 long years, the church remained vacant, facing tragic times after a fire in 1984 caused significant damage—thanks to an individual seeking warmth on a chilly night. This unfortunate event led to the roof’s collapse and much of the church’s interior being destroyed, leaving behind a poignant story before its incredible transformation began.

From Vision to Reality

Thanks to the vision of Hugh McColl, the former chairman of Bank of America, the church was reborn as an urban arts colony aimed at sparking creativity in Charlotte. In 1995, Bank of America stepped in to purchase the building. With a new future in mind, they hired FMK Architects to revamp the space into a versatile arts facility while keeping its historic charm intact. The McColl Center was initially known as the Tryon Center for Visual Art but became the beloved institution it is today.

A Haven for Artists

The McColl Center has become a creative haven, offering a variety of art labs dedicated to ceramics, welding, woodworking, printmaking, and digital media. Its Artist-In-Residence program, launched in 1999, has welcomed over 500 artists from all corners of the globe, representing an impressive 36 different countries, including Vietnam, Japan, Uganda, China, Cuba, and New Zealand! This melding of cultures has added a unique vibrancy to the center.

Among the very first artists to grace the residency was Polish multimedia artist Marek Ranis, who has participated in impactful projects, including those focusing on climate change. The center continues to innovate, recently launching new studio spaces for local artists in 2020, just as the world was grappling with the COVID pandemic.

Connecting Art with the Community

In an effort to foster community engagement, the McColl Center established its first art-collecting club called The Contemporaries in early 2024. This allows local art enthusiasts to purchase memberships and buy unique artwork created by resident artists. Furthermore, the Knight Foundation has played a significant role in supporting the center since its inception, facilitating various initiatives aimed at strengthening the arts in Charlotte.

Another exciting partnership has been formed with Atrium Health, allowing McColl Center artists to collaborate on projects designed to enhance patient experiences with art displayed in hospitals, making health care spaces more inviting and enjoyable. Artwork created by McColl Center artists can now be found throughout various locations in Charlotte, including public transport systems, providing artistic flair to everyday commutes.

Annual Fundraisers and Community Events

The McColl Center supports its mission through an annual artist auction where talented artists donate their work, and the proceeds are shared with the center. The next exciting auction is scheduled for February 22, 2025. Additionally, Family Days are held every month on the second Saturday, offering fun activities with resident artists for the entire family.

Other initiatives include a summer camp program for kids, providing a chance to explore creative avenues while scholarships are available for those who need a little help. Moreover, a new summer internship program targeting high school and college students interested in arts administration was launched to encourage the next generation of art leaders.

Reflecting on a Quarter-Century of Impact

As part of its 25th-anniversary celebration, the McColl Center will host an exhibit titled “Ties That Bind: Portraits by Mitchell Kearney of Artists at the McColl Center, 1999-2008”. This special showcase will feature striking photographs of early artists-in-residence, highlighting memorable performances and contributions over the years.

In true celebratory fashion, the McColl Center invites the Charlotte community to share their cherished memories associated with the center. This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to join in the excitement honoring a quarter-century of artistic impact and community engagement.
