Moorhead is buzzing with excitement as a significant transformation is taking place in its downtown area. The skyline will soon be graced with the new 650 Block project, a mixed-use building that’s destined to bring a fresh look and feel to the city. Located at the corner of Center Avenue and Seventh Street, the building is one of the first of its kind to rise above ground level as part of a larger plan to rejuvenate downtown Moorhead.
This ambitious project was initially referred to as the 600 Block, but the name change hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm surrounding it. Inside, the building will feature businesses on the first floor, while apartments will make their home on the upper levels. Developer Kevin Bartram has shared that construction is going really smoothly so far. However, he also noted that working in downtown might present a few surprises, such as discovering old foundations and underground pipes.
“Of course, we ran into all that in the site because it was originally built up previously,” Bartram explained. “So, nothing we were not expecting, but you never know exactly what you’re going to run into.”
The 650 Block is part of a much larger vision that seeks to redevelop nine city blocks within downtown Moorhead, blending apartments, commercial spaces, and parking facilities. The building itself will consist of a first-floor parking structure, commercial shops, and stair and elevator towers, all constructed with precisely designed precast concrete. In the following stages, three stories of wood framing will rise above the concrete foundation. Interestingly, this structure will consist of two wings of apartments, one facing the bustling Center Avenue and the other offering serene views of the Red River.
One of the core businesses, Downtown Chiropractic, will be moving into the new 650 Block building, marking a new era for its operations. Bartram hopes to have the building completed by early fall of 2025.
Just a stone’s throw away from the new building, there’s plenty of activity on a section of a newly constructed road in downtown Moorhead. Workers have successfully completed the necessary sewer and water work under the new road, and they are now in the process of pouring concrete for the roadway and curbs on a portion of Sixth Street. This road will not only facilitate access to the parking lot but also offer a more connected downtown experience.
City Engineer Tom Trowbridge shared that they’re fortunate to continue working, especially knowing that many projects can be halted once the winter months arrive. The goal is to have Sixth Street ready for use possibly by the end of the week of November 18th.
The Moorhead Center Mall is also currently undergoing some transitions. With fewer businesses left in the mall—most remaining on the eastern side—Moorhead’s DMV has relocated to a new building on 15th Avenue North. Meanwhile, City Hall has temporarily moved its services across Center Avenue during some renovations, while other businesses like Downtown Chiropractic are in a waiting game until their new spaces are complete.
The anticipation in Moorhead doesn’t end with the construction of the 650 Block. With the western side of the Mall slowly vacating, preparations for the next phase of demolition are expected to kick off in late winter or early spring. These steps will pave the way for further infrastructure and development projects that will enhance the city over the next few years.
Another exciting prospect for Moorhead is the construction of a new public library and community center located just southeast of the mall. Crews have been busy working on this site, and they’ve made some substantial progress that includes installing precast concrete beams and columns in the basement, along with preparing for the ground floor. This new facility is anticipated to make its grand opening in the spring of 2026.
Moorhead is undoubtedly on the brink of an exciting new chapter, and everyone is looking forward to seeing how all of these projects will change the face of downtown. Each step brings the community closer to a bright and vibrant future!
