Charlotte, get ready to welcome a fresh face in the legal world! The renowned law firm Akerman LLP, based in sunny Miami, has chosen our very own Queen City as its latest expansion hotspot. This exciting move marks the second office opening in just five months, following their debut in Wilmington, Delaware. It seems the buzz about Charlotte’s rapid growth has caught the attention of big players in the legal arena, and we’re all for it!
So, what’s behind Akerman’s decision to plant roots here in Charlotte? According to Scott Meyers, the firm’s chairman and CEO, the choice was all about meeting client needs. He emphasized, “Charlotte is one of the fastest-growing markets in North America, well known as a critical hub in the financial, energy, technology, healthcare, and manufacturing sectors.” With such a dynamic background, it only makes sense for Akerman to establish a foothold here, expanding their long-standing tradition of offering top-notch legal services to local clients.
Currently, Akerman is operating out of a temporary space located at One South, a stunning 40-story office in the heart of uptown Charlotte (101 S. Tryon St.). However, plans are in motion to secure a permanent office space, as the firm continues gearing up for a long-term presence in the region. Exciting times ahead for everyone involved!
To lead the charge in Charlotte, Akerman has brought in two experienced attorneys who are familiar faces in the local legal scene: Josh DeBottis and John McCaffrey. Both have recently joined from Moore & Van Allen, Charlotte’s largest law firm. As co-chair of renewable energy and electric power, Josh DeBottis will be instrumental in expanding Akerman’s national energy practices. Meanwhile, McCaffrey’s wealth of knowledge and experience will ensure that clients receive top-tier service as the firm grows in this vibrant market.
With ambitions to grow, Akerman’s future in Charlotte looks bright. Meyers mentioned that hiring will continue based on demand, stating, “There is no magic number… We will continue to hire outstanding lawyers and professional staff who align with our firm culture and values.” This means the firm is not only focusing on providing exceptional services but also enriching the local community with talented professionals. And guess what? More lawyers are expected to join the team soon!
Founded back in 1920, Akerman has grown tremendously over the decades. Today, the firm boasts a talented pool of over 700 attorneys working across 26 offices nationally. Alongside Charlotte, the firm also has a location in Winston-Salem, making North Carolina a key area of focus.
As Akerman works to integrate itself into the Charlotte community, there’s a palpable excitement about the potential collaborations and contributions that the firm could bring to the table. Meyers expressed enthusiasm about fostering strong connections within the community, noting, “With a permanent presence in Charlotte, Akerman is well-positioned to directly deliver the client service excellence for which we are known nationally.” It sounds like Charlotte is in for quite a treat!
As we gear up to meet Akerman LLP and its dynamic team, it’s clear that this expansion will not only elevate the local legal landscape but also strengthen our community ties. Cheers to new beginnings and fresh opportunities in the Queen City!
