CHARLOTTE — In a heartbreaking turn of events, families in a northwest Charlotte neighborhood are struggling to navigate the aftermath of devastating flood damage caused by the recent storm, Helene. While some residents are looking to sell their homes to the Mecklenburg County government through a buyout program, many find themselves stuck in a frustrating wait for their flood insurance claims to be processed. And with the holidays approaching, the urgency for resolution is palpable.
A Tough Decision for Homeowners
Take Anna Davis, for example. After spending 37 years in her home along Riverside Drive, she faced a truly difficult choice after floodwaters surged into her property, leaving it with over 66% damage. “We were up all night thinking about what to do,” she shared, grappling with an emotional decision to sell her beloved home as part of the county’s floodplain buyout program.
The county’s program offers homeowners the chance to sell their properties for the tax value plus an additional 7%. Anna is ready to sell, but there’s one major hurdle: her flood insurance claim. “It’s been a nightmare,” she lamented, recounting that she filed her claim on September 27 — the day after the flooding — but has been left in the dark ever since.
How Long is Too Long?
Now, nearly two months later, she is still waiting. “They told me the process would take 30 days, but here we are, 54 days and counting!” she exclaimed. With numerous other homeowners in similar situations, the county can’t make offers until the insurance claims are resolved. “Nobody knows what the adjusters have reported back,” Anna stated with frustration.
The Bigger Picture
According to Storm Water Services, around 30 homeowners have expressed interest in the buyout program. Out of this group, 11 are confirmed to have flood insurance, yet the county has only received three claims so far. Many others, like Anna, are left waiting — each day dragging on without answers. “Everyone’s trying to piece back their lives,” she said, emphasizing the emotional toll this process is taking.

With the holiday season just around the corner, the longing for stability is stronger than ever. “People just want a house,” Anna reflected. “They want to go home and worry about things like dinner, not if they want to stay or go.” This time of year usually brings joy, but for many families, the uncertainty adds an extra layer of stress.
