Charlotte, NC – Former private school administrator Scott Michael Waybright, 58, was arrested on Friday and charged with multiple felony offenses related to secret peeping and possessing photographic images obtained through illegal means. The arrest followed a thorough investigation by local authorities after allegations about his behavior surfaced, leading to significant concern in the community.
Waybright, who served as the assistant head of school for academics at Charlotte Country Day School for nearly 30 years, was found with hundreds of inappropriate photos on his work phone and laptop. According to court documents, these images included a disturbing collection of women’s legs and backsides. Importantly, investigators noted that many of the photographs seemed to feature potential students and employees.
The investigation into Waybright began when a teacher reported an incident involving a student who claimed that he had taken photos of her. Although the head of the school reviewed Waybright’s phone at that time, no inappropriate content was detected. However, the teacher expressed dissatisfaction with how the situation was handled and believed the student’s claims. This prompted the school to hire a private investigator, who subsequently uncovered the troubling images.
The revelation has sent shockwaves through the local community. A neighbor of Waybright’s expressed disbelief and disgust, stating, “It was absolutely shocking. It made us sick to our stomach.” Local residents are grappling with the implications of his actions, especially given his long tenure at an educational institution.
Court records reveal that Waybright was not a stranger to complaints. In 2017, a man accused him of photographing his wife in a library, but no evidence was discovered at that time. These earlier concerns were overshadowed by the recent discovery of an extensive amount of inappropriate content, leading to increased scrutiny of Waybright’s past behavior.
In light of the serious allegations, Charlotte Country Day School has taken immediate action. The institution has officially banned Waybright from its premises and has communicated with parents about the situation. The school is also establishing a task force that will include national experts to address privacy and safety concerns. Additionally, they plan to bolster security measures by hiring two additional security personnel.
During a court hearing on Monday, Waybright did not attend in person, but his attorney represented him. He is currently out on bond as the investigation continues. Authorities have expressed determination to thoroughly explore all aspects of this case, ensuring that justice is served.
The case against Scott Michael Waybright highlights critical issues around privacy and safety in educational settings. As the investigation unfolds, the community remains vigilant, seeking answers and reassurance that the safety of students and families is a top priority.
