Four prominent builders have staked their claim in the River District, including David Weekley Homes, DRB Homes, Saussy Burbank, and Toll Brothers. Together, they will be rolling out a total of 129 single-family homes and townhomes at the stylized town center of the development. The project, which was first proposed back in 2016, is projected to bring an exciting new lifestyle choice to west Charlotte.
Construction activities officially got underway in 2023, with the first homes expected to be available for delivery by spring 2025. When complete, the River District will offer a staggering total of more than 2,300 single-family homes and 2,350 multifamily apartments, alongside additional senior housing units. City planners foresee a future community enriched with an array of amenities that will cater to residents of all ages.
Approximately 40% of the River District will be set aside as open space, including public access to the scenic Catawba River. This thoughtful design emphasizes a commitment to maintaining natural beauty amid development. Residents will enjoy 30 miles of trails for outdoor activities, encouraging an active lifestyle while soaking up the area’s diverse landscapes.
Addressing the ongoing challenge of housing affordability, the River District has provisions for over 500 apartments and 124 houses reserved as affordable options. This initiative is crucial, as city officials stress the importance of including affordable housing in the new community.
The buzz around the project continues with the construction of a 317-unit apartment complex known as Novel River District, which is already underway. In addition, Toll Brothers plans to unveil a community featuring 63 luxury three-story townhomes, catering to the high-end market with pricing starting from the $500,000s. These homes will provide prospective buyers with options ranging from 3 to 4 bedrooms and spacious layouts of up to 2,280 square feet.
Residents can look forward to a wealth of upcoming amenities which will include multiple pools, a clubhouse, a dog park, a playground, and even a farmers market. The extensive network of walking and biking trails will connect residents not only to their neighborhoods but also to the beautiful Catawba River, promising a lifestyle interwoven with outdoor adventure.
Plans for further enhancements include a pavilion, more playgrounds, and a 2-acre working farm, fostering a sense of community and sustainability. Access to critical road networks, including Interstate 485 and Highways 74 and 160, is strategically positioned to ensure easy commutes for residents.
While the excitement is palpable, it is important to note that the overall development may take up to twelve years to fully complete before the first homes are sold.
