Rock Hill Entrepreneur Tanisha Burke Wins $5,000 at Pitch for Growth Competition

Rock Hill’s Malaysian Lights Takes Center Stage at Pitch for Growth Competition

Rock Hill, SC – Exciting news for local entrepreneurs came from the 2024 Score Charlotte “Pitch for Growth” competition held at the breathtaking Mint Museum on Randolph Road. Tanisha Burke, the proud owner of Malaysian Lights, shone through the competitive field and took home the grand prize of $5,000. But that wasn’t all! She also won the coveted People’s Choice Award, a testament to her impressive pitch that captivated the audience.

Creativity Meets Sensitivity

Malaysian Lights has carved a unique niche in the industry, providing a range of handmade products such as candles, wax melts, car diffusers, and room sprays, all carefully crafted for individuals with scent sensitivities. In a world full of mass-produced scents, Burke’s approach demonstrates a commitment to both quality and inclusivity. Her products not only smell wonderful but are designed to be gentle and accommodating for those who often find themselves overwhelmed by strong fragrances.

Competing for a Cause

This year’s competition had an impressive lineup, attracting 150 applicants from various backgrounds. After a thorough selection process, 10 talented finalists were chosen to pitch their ideas in person. The event was open to small business owners from a whopping 13 counties in North Carolina and three in South Carolina. For Burke, and many other competitors, this was more than just a contest; it was a golden opportunity to gain visibility and connect with seasoned professionals.

A Unique Opportunity

Jim Chickarello, who co-chaired the event, couldn’t agree more. He described the competition as an extraordinary venue for entrepreneurs to showcase their innovations and ideas. “It also gave them an opportunity to meet local bankers and marketing experts who can provide them with valuable feedback as they develop a business and growth plan,” he noted. It’s rare for entrepreneurs to find such a supportive environment all in one place!

More Winners in the Spotlight

While Tanisha Burke was the star of the night, the competition also recognized other outstanding peers who dared to dream and pitch their ideas. Each participant brought something special to the table, contributing to what was an inspiring evening for the Rock Hill community.

A Bright Future Ahead

This marks the second year that U.S. Bank has taken the reins as the sponsor for the Pitch for Growth competition, and their commitment continues to fuel local entrepreneurial spirits. With such support, the hope is to encourage even more budding business owners to take the leap and share their passions with the world.
