San Diego, CA – In a shocking case that has left many questioning safety in the skies, a man who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl during an American Airlines flight will be spending time behind bars. Ryan Bill Coffey, 31, was sentenced to two years in federal prison and will face ten years of supervised release.
The disturbing incident took place on January 7, 2023, when Coffey was on a flight from Charlotte, North Carolina to San Diego, California. According to court records, Coffey approached a young girl seated alone and, offering her alcohol, took a disturbing turn. It’s reported that he handed her rum, reassuring her that the drink would help her relax, especially after she disclosed her fear of flying.
Prosecutors revealed that Coffey didn’t just stop there; after learning she was a minor, he continued to offer her more alcohol. It’s deeply troubling to think that he utilized such manipulative tactics in an effort to create a situation where the girl would be less able to resist his actions.
According to a witness on the flight, Coffey pulled a bottle of liquor from his bag and insisted that the rum would calm the anxious teenager. But what transpired next was nothing short of horrifying as he was reported to have groped the girl during the flight, touching her inner thigh and breasts. Heartbreakingly, he also reportedly forced her to engage in sexual acts.
This serious violation of trust and safety culminated in Coffey pleading guilty to abusive sexual contact of a minor on an aircraft. Sentencing took place on November 4, 2023, where the federal judge also imposed a restatement of $5,583.75 and a $5,000 penalty under the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act.
U.S. Attorney Tara McGrath praised the young girl’s bravery in coming forward, stating, “Thanks to the courage of a brave girl who reported what happened in the dark on a plane, and swift engagement from law enforcement, (Coffey) was brought to justice.”
During sentencing, prosecutors made it clear that this wasn’t just a lapse in judgment but a premeditated act that has left a lasting impact on the victim. Coffey’s decision to intoxicate her before assaulting her was cited as a clear demonstration of his intentions. “It’s clear why he gave her alcohol,” the sentencing memorandum stated, emphasizing how he aimed to exploit her vulnerability.
Interestingly, following his flight-related offenses, the court ordered Coffey to refrain from consuming alcohol, yet he apparently did not heed that order. This disregard for the law only further underscores the gravity of his actions and the pain he inflicted.
The repercussions of Coffey’s crimes go beyond prison time. His actions have caused immense suffering for his young victim, who now faces the daunting task of healing from this traumatic experience.
It’s crucial for anyone who has faced similar situations to know they’re not alone. Resources are available, such as the National Sexual Assault Hotline, which offers support and guidance.
